The Big Picture First: Montessori’s Cosmic Curriculum
One of the most beautiful aspects of Montessori education is the Cosmic Curriculum and the Five Great Lessons. Instead of starting with isolated facts, Montessori begins with the whole story of the universe: how everything came to be and how all things are connected.
From the explosive birth of the universe, to the coming of life, humans, language, numbers, and our responsibility to the Earth, children are invited into a grand narrative that gives meaning to their learning. These lessons spark curiosity and wonder, then gently open the door to deeper exploration.
Montessori learning follows a whole-to-part, spiral approach. Children first see the big picture, then revisit ideas again and again- each time with more focus, detail, and understanding. History connects to science, science connects to geography, math connects to culture… nothing is taught in isolation.
The result? Children don’t just memorize information, they understand how everything fits together. They see themselves as part of a larger story and develop a sense of purpose, responsibility, and connection to the world around them.
This is how Montessori nurtures not only academic growth, but thoughtful, curious, and compassionate global citizens
