Reasons Why Oats are One of the Healthiest Foods on Earth

- Oats are rich in carbs and fibre, and higher in protein and fat than most other grains. They also contain many vitamins and minerals.

- Oats contain many powerful antioxidants which can aid in blood pressure reduction, as well as provide many other benefits.

- Oats are rich in the soluble fibre beta-glucan, which has numerous benefits including aiding in the reduction of cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and promoting healthy gut bacteria and increasing feelings of fullness.

- The beta-glucan fibre in the oats may improve insulin sensitivity and help lower blood sugar levels combating type 2 diabetes.

- Oats may lower the risk of heart disease by reducing LDL cholesterol levels (bad cholesterol)

- Oatmeal may help you lose weight by making you feel fuller. It does this by decreasing the rate at which the stomach empties and increasing production of the satiety hormone PYY (hunger hormone that reduces appetite).

- Colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats) is often used to help combat dry and itchy skin, and can relieve the symptoms of various skin conditions, e.g. eczema.

- Some research suggests that oats may help prevent asthma in children when fed to young infants.

- Studies show that oats can aid in the reduction of constipation, significantly reducing the need to use laxatives, especially in elderly individuals.

The Sushi Craze - Healthy or Unhealthy?

Sushi contains numerous healthy and nutrient-rich ingredients, such as fish, wasabi, seaweed and pickled ginger.

Containing a substantial amount of refined carbs, sushi can lead to overeating, as well as increase your risk of inflammation, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. It also often contains high-fat sauces and toppings, but generally minimal vegetables or fish which can lead to one consuming a high-calorie meal that may not even satisfy one’s hunger. Sushi can contain a substantial amount of salt, which can promote high blood pressure in some people increase the risk of stomach cancer and.

Maximizing the health benefits of Sushi:

- Choose sushi rolls made with brown rice instead of white rice to increase your nutrient intake.
- Select cone-shaped hand rolls, namely temaki. These rolls contain less rice than more traditional rolls.
- Increase protein and fibre in your meal by including a portion of edamame, a wakame salad, a miso soup or sashimi.
- Refrain from having rolls made with cream cheese, sauces or tempura. To add crunchiness without these unhealthy ingredients, ask for additional vegetables.
- Reduce soy sauce. If you are salt-sensitive, avoid soy sauce or only lightly brush the top of your sushi with it.
- Refrain from having rolls made with salty smoked fish or fish species at high risk of toxin contamination.

Conclusion
Sushi is rich in numerous vitamins, minerals and health-stimulating compounds. However, they are not all equally healthy or nutritious. Some are high in refined carbs and may contain ingredients that can be problematic. Following the tips above will promote the health benefits of sushi.

#TrainingTipTuesday 05/07/2016

- Increasing the Size of your Calves

When performing plantar flexion (raising the heel off the ground) while standing the gastrocnemius is primarily recruited while the soleus is primarily used when sitting.
Gastrocnemius - straight leg exercises
Soleus - bent leg exercises

It is better to use hevier weights with lower reps to produce more force during exercises that target the gastrocnemius muscle (straight leg exercises), and lighter weights with greater volume reps during exercises for the soleus muscle.
