How do you know if an education programme is really working? 🤔

Well, learners on the JumpStart foundational mathematics programme are monitored and tracked through our platform called JumpTrak.

Once they complete the NumberSense workbook exercises, results are entered, and we can see in real time, who is progressing and who needs support, which is immediately available to help get them back on track.

This is measurable impact, and it matters, because it not only helps us to improve the programme, but it shows us that learners are gaining the understanding they need to take mathematics confidently from grade 3 into grade 4, 5 and all the way to matric and beyond!

Today, our programme reaches more than 26 000 learners. And with measurable results we can get even more support to increase this number. Because hope isn’t based on empty optimism, it’s based on evidence and results that can be seen.

The JumpStart Foundation's new short film is finally here! 👏🎥

So if you’ve been looking for a feel-good South African story, here’s ours.

We all know the numbers that can make us feel overwhelmed: 46% youth unemployment, inequality, and a mathematics crisis affecting the future of millions of our children.

But what if we told you there is a programme already helping to change those numbers?

The JumpStart Foundation’s foundational mathematics programme is currently reaching more than 26 000 learners across 487 classrooms in 5 provinces, while also employing young interns (called Educator Assistants) to assist in overcrowded classrooms.

Since inception, over 200 000 learners have benefited from our programme and over 220 youth are employed every year, and the numbers are increasing. These are the numbers that give us hope.

So, watch our new brand film for the full story, and learn more about our work: https://jumpstart.org.za/what-we-do/

A special update from our Eastern Cape work 🌟
Thanks to the invaluable support and contributions of the DG Murray Trust (DGMT), our school intervention programme in Mthatha went digital in September 2025. This funding has helped to equip five primary schools with fibre and tablets, so foundational learners can practise digital NumberSense activities on their tablets, exercising their technical skills and building critical thinking skills.

DGMT’s commitment to investing in young people and levelling the playing field extends to our youth programme too — in Mthatha we have 11 interns employed from the community. They not only support teachers and learners in mathematics, but also gain essential work experience.

Lastly, but very importantly, our Teacher Training, the Two Pathways programme, is expertly delivered in partnership with Kelello Collective. This is a blended development programme that includes face-to-face training as well as an EdTech component funded by the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT). Thanks to OMT’s support, teachers learn useful strategies that they can then develop over time with self-paced digital practise, improving their own sense of mathematics, so they can better teach the subject as a whole.

Thank you to both DGMT and OMT for investing in this work and creating real opportunities and meaningful change in the Eastern Cape.

In case you missed it…

The JumpStart Foundation got a bit of airtime on national television two weeks ago.

Our Executive Director, Lufuno Muthubi-Mthethwa, joined the Expresso Show with Graeme Richards to share how we can better support foundational phase learners and teachers with mathematics confidence and skills from the ground up.

Because when kids understand numbers from an early age, a whole world of opportunities in the digital economy open up for them.

Proud moment. Important conversation.

Thanks to Expresso Morning Show and Graeme Richards for hosting Lufuno Muthubi - Mthethwa - our Executive Director - last week

We love spreading the word about how important foundational mathematics with NumberSense and MathsSense Mathematics Programmes is for a child’s solid future.

But it was also great to chat about our other programmes, namely our teacher training and youth employment which both underpin the learner intervention we do.

If you didn’t watch the interview live, watch it now, part of our upcoming short film was played 🤩

Meet the people behind the scenes 🌟

Zintle Panca is JumpStart’s Project Manager responsible for the seamless implementation of our programme in Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the Free State.

For the upcoming JumpStart Film, Zintle helped secure interviews with key people and also one of the locations: Kingsway School — the very first school where the JumpStart mathematics NumberSense programme began, and where it still continues today.

Zintle organised everything — from the headmistress, to a school hall where we could film a number of interviews for the day, she also arranged a delicious breakfast for all of us to, and gathered props needed for the backdrop.

This is the kind of behind-the-scenes work that looks effortless… but takes serious coordination, care, and commitment. And Zintle takes it all in her stride.

Zintle’s daily functions help bring NumberSense into classrooms, but on a deeper impact level, she is contributing to strengthening how mathematics is taught through teacher support, training and digital tools for learners, EAs and teachers.

Zintle started as an EA herself and has progressed through the organisation, an ambassador for how the JumpStart programme can meaningfully change lives.

Meet the humans behind the JumpStart film❤️

Peaceful Ngobeni is one of those people who just makes things happen.

He is a JumpStart Project Manager operating in Mopani East and West. He oversees 50 schools across Giyani and Tzaneen, leading one coordinator, 15 team leads and 61 interns.

Before the JumpStart production team had arrived, Peace had everything lined up for us: schools, a headmaster, Educator Assistants to interview, even access to teacher training sessions so we could capture every moment of the JumpStart programme in action.

But the floods hit a week before filming and everything had to shift, as schools were closed and communities were affected by the devastating damage.

Through the weather chaos, Peace lived up to his name and calmly kept us up to date and things moving in spite of uncertainty.

He made sure we could film the teacher training without disrupting it, organised a workspace for the team on the film set. He arranged the interviews with teachers, a school headmistress, and interns, connecting us with the dedicated people who help bring the JumpStart programme to life.

This was all at the start of the school year when the pressure was already high, but Peace’s kind, capable and calm nature ensured we got all the authentic, quality footage and content we needed.

Thank you Peaceful for your invaluable contribution to the JumpStart film. It’s launching soon so watch this space!
