Youth Day holds a profound weight for me—not as a commemoration, but as a moment of necessary reckoning. I often return to the courage of the black youth of 1976, who faced the machinery of a violent state with nothing but conviction, clarity of purpose, and the will to sacrifice. Their struggle was not abstract. It was embodied. It cost them their futures so that we might have ours.
Now, standing in the freedom they imagined (still ongoing), I ask myself: What am I doing—what am I willing to do—with the life they made possible? Reflection without responsibility feels hollow. It is easy to critique the present, to point to the failures of democracy, the inefficacy of political structures, and the betrayal of promises. But I live with gratitude, and gratitude, for me, does not mean passivity. Of course I carry a deep sense of appreciation, but I am not satisfied. That is precisely why I ought to act without ceasing.
Change is not the task of elders alone or others. It never has been. The future of South Africa—like that of the continent—depends on what we, the youth(oh yes I'm still very youth 😄), are willing to build, defend, and imagine. Our voices are not just needed—they are central.
So on this Youth Day, may we not just remember. May we step fully into the responsibility of shaping the world that those before us believed we could inherit.
Happy Youth Day. Reflect deeply. Act deliberately! Amandla Awethu 💪💪💪 Aluta Continua ✊✊
