Neurodiversity is not a problem to fix, it’s a difference to understand. 🧠✨

This Neurodiversity Week, we’re celebrating the many ways children think, learn, and experience the world.

Neurodiversity include and is not limited to :
Autism • ADHD • Down Syndrome • Dyslexia • Dyspraxia • Dysgraphia • Epilepsy • Global Developmental Delays • Sensory Processing Differences

Each child has their own strengths, challenges, and way of communicating and they deserve to be supported, not changed.

Our neurodiversity-affirming approach:
✔️ We follow the child
✔️ We support communication in all forms
✔️ We respect sensory needs
✔️ We build independence and confidence

Because progress doesn’t mean becoming someone else, it means becoming more of who you are

Let’s talk about ABA for “high functioning” autism 💭

When people hear ABA, they often think of early learners but ABA is just as powerful for children who are verbal, academically capable, and cognitively strong.

For our higher functioning learners, the focus shifts.

We target things like:
• Teaching a child how to use a planner and break a big project into smaller steps
• Helping them cope when plans change unexpectedly
• Practicing how to join a group conversation without interrupting
• Learning what to say (and what not to say) in tricky social situations
• Building strategies for managing frustration before it becomes a meltdown
• Teaching time management for homework and daily routines
• Developing independence in school tasks without constant prompting

Because success isn’t just about academics — it’s about regulation, relationships, confidence, and independence. ABA isn’t about changing who a child is.
It’s about giving them the tools to thrive in a world that doesn’t always make sense to them.

Different abilities. Great possibilities. 🤍

Rewriting the Conversation Around ABA❤️

Applied Behavior Analysis has a complex history — and it’s important that we talk about it honestly.

There are individuals and families whose experiences with ABA were harmful, compliance-driven, or dismissive of autonomy. Those experiences are real, and they deserve to be acknowledged — not explained away or invalidated.

At the same time, it’s equally important not to place ABA as a discipline under the same umbrella as ABA done incorrectly.

A brief look at the history:
ABA emerged in the mid-20th century as a science focused on understanding how learning occurs through the interaction between behavior and the environment. Early applications, particularly in autism intervention, often reflected the values and clinical norms of the time — many of which prioritized normalization and compliance over autonomy and emotional wellbeing.

As our understanding of neurodiversity, ethics, and child development has grown, ABA has evolved.

Modern, ethical ABA is guided by:
• Assent and consent
• Trauma-informed practice
• Functional communication over behavior suppression
• Quality of life as the primary outcome

Decades of peer-reviewed research continue to support ABA’s effectiveness in teaching communication, self-help, social, and adaptive skills — when implemented ethically, collaboratively, and with respect for the individual.

Harm does not come from the science itself.
Harm comes from:
❌ Poor training
❌ Lack of supervision
❌ Ignoring sensory, emotional, and communicative needs
❌ Using behavior reduction without skill-building

Progress requires us to hold two truths at once:
✔️ Some people were hurt by ABA
✔️ ABA, when done right, remains a powerful, evidence-based tool for support

The future of ABA is not about defending the past — it’s about doing better, listening more, collaborating across disciplines, and centering the voices of the individuals we serve.

That’s how we move forward — together

2026 at Thrive Through Therapy

We’re starting 2026 with structured programmes designed for children who need more than a classroom — but less than a school label.

Our programmes support children who struggle in mainstream or assisted learning environments with:
• early literacy (phonological awareness, pre-reading skills)
• early numeracy foundations
• attention, working memory & task engagement
• fine motor and pre-writing skills
• emotional & sensory regulation within learning tasks
Communication & functional life skills
• behaviour support that translates into academic readiness

Our programmes are curriculum-informed, evidence-based, and individualised, delivered through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates:
• ABA Therapy
• Speech Therapy
• Occupational Therapy
