Forewarning:
The Ekuruleni Management Council (MANCO) held a meeting on 15 March 2018 at the Kempton park civic center to deliberate on the planning of the protest march on 20 March 2018.

The purpose of the march is about the grievances of the ERTC against the EMM for the withdrawal of funding the KTVR operations and the R 800 million which were intended to buy new KTVR busses.

The logistics of the protest march are the following:

1. All members of MANCO who are the executives of the taxi associations will converge at the ERTC offices in Pomona from 21:00 - 00:00.

2. Taxi drivers and owners will converge at Esibayeni in Kempton Park and will proceed to next to the ERTC offices around 02:00 am on 20 March 2018 to meet with MANCO members.

3. The plan is block the R21/R24 highway, both directions leading to ORTIA. The march is meant to disrupt the traffic flow into and out of ORTIA.

4. Trucks will be hijacked, keys confiscated and truck drivers will then be driven out of the area by assigned taxis. These trucks will be used to close off the highway.

The meeting undertook not to disclose the points/ on/ off ramps where the highway will be blocked.

There are further plans to block the railway lines going to Kempton Park. Points to be blocked were also not disclosed in this regard.

4. The protest will proceed to Germiston where other associations operating from the eastern and southern parts of Ekurhuleni will be met with their counterpart in the southern part of Ekurhuleni.

5. The entire protest will proceed to the Mayoral Chambers in Germiston to hand over a memorandum of their grievance.

Six Everyday Radio calls in Morse

The SOS distress signal does not stand for anything.
The ... _ _ _ ... was easy to transmit in Morse code. Before the standardisation of an international distress signal in July 1908, other countries had their own signals. Germany used SOE, Italy SSSDDD and Britain transmitted CQD.

At the Berlin conference, it was recognised that in Morse code the letter E was represented by one dot (.) and could be mistyped.

The E was replaced with an S as three dots (...) was clearer. Although the SOS signal was officially adopted in 1908 and used successfully in July 1909 when a shipwreck occurred in Portugal. However it was not used in April 1912. That fateful night, the Titanic radio operator first transmitted the old CQD distress signal. Only afterwards did he try the new signal, commenting that he might never get the chance to try it again.

Although Morse equipment has been replaced at sea by the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, it is still useful to know some emergency Morse signals.

Six Everyday radio calls in Morse

1. Starting: _ . _ . _ .
2. Over: _ . _
3. Wait: . _ . . .
4. Roger: . . . _
5. End: . . . _ . _
6. Error: . . . . . . . .

Learn this skill and other means of signalling for help on one of our courses.

H.E.A.T. tip: If you are unlawfully detained, blink your eyes in Morse code and communicate without alerting your captors.
