Happy Mother's Day to mothers who know different.β₯οΈ
I can't let today go by without a special Happy Mother's Day to mothers raising a child or children with disabilities. I know that today will likely not be very different to any other day. My daughter Savannah said "mummy" when she was ten years old. I will never forget what they moment felt like. And I know what it means to mothers whose "normal" is "overthinking" to keep their child safe.
To the single mothers, the married mothers, the step mothers, the stand-in mothers, the lonely mothers, the exhausted mothers, the mothers who are facing their child's terminal diagnosis. And the mothers like me...who fought hard for their child but have lost their child to mental illness....I see you.
May this inspired message comfort you today:
"Mum, thank you for lifting me every day.
Thank you for pushing my wheelchair and for talking to me when no one else will.
Thank you for being brave and taking me out even though you and I can't always predict what will cause me to have a melt down.
Thank you for trying so hard to find a school that will work with us.
Thank you for not giving up on me when doctors give up.
Thank you for the nights you sit up with me and for the fun you create on days when you haven't slept.
Thank you for being human and weeping when it's all too much. That gives me permission to weep too.
Thank you for remembering where my pink bangle with the star is when I just can't stop thinking about it even though I have many other pink bangles.
Thank you mum for allowing people to come into our home, sacrificing our personal space so that they can help me.
Thank you for believing that one day I'll say "mummy" but until that day please know that your smell, your eyes, the feel of your hair, your touch and your voice is my whole world.
I wish so much I wasn't your all whole world because other people need to know how wonderful you are too.
Thank you mum for being mine.
You make my small world the most magical, magnificent, adventurous place any child could ask for.
I love you forever plus one."
