In partnership with our friends, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung South Africa we hosted our annual Careers Evening on 7 August 2018.
We were excited to host, South African radio DJ, Anele Mdoda, Entrepreneur and Author, Thato Kgatlhanye, Head of Membership and Communications at the National Business Initiative, Gillian Hutchings and Junior Researcher at the African Peer Review Mechanism Secretariat, Lennon Monyae.

Your final speaker for the evening is Lennon Monyae!
Lennon holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the University of the Witwatersrand. His passion is youth empowerment - a focal point of his research! As part of his goal to see youth becoming more involved with the governance process, Lennon formed part of a group of African delegates at the Africa/Asia Youth Conference (Beijing) & Africa/ China Youth Conference (Guangzhou) in 2016.
Lennon joined the African Peer Review Mechanism Secretariat in 2016, where he works as a Junior Researcher. His work focuses on African illicit financial flows, Silencing the Guns in Africa (Agenda 2020) and Sino-Africa relations. In his role at the APRM, Lennon also managed Communications, Democracy and Political Governance (DPG) Research aspects of the Republic of Uganda 2nd Review Mission in 2017. Lennon is currently working on the APRM State of Governance Report (SoGR), which will be presented at the Africa Union Heads of States Summit in January 2019.

Your third speaker for the evening is Gillian Hutchings!
Gillian is the Head of Membership and Communications at the National Business Initiative, a voluntary group of leading national and multi-national companies, working together towards sustainable growth and development in South Africa.
Before NBI, Gillian was seconded to the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) as secretary to the Management Committee and the Daily Management Committee. These two bodies consisted of senior political leaders negotiating the future constitution of the country. When CODESA broke down and the Multi-Party Negotiating Process succeeded it, Gillian was appointed as the secretary to the Planning Committee and the Negotiating Council, from which the success of the South African Transition emanated.

Your second speaker for the evening is Thato Kgatlhanye!
Thato is changing the face of women-led business in Africa and has been publicly earmarked by Bill Gates as an entrepreneur to watch on the continent. With a BA in Brand Management from VEGA, Thato started her career in New York working with American marketing guru Seth Godin.
Upon her return, she founded Rethaka, a group of companies with interests in manufacturing and waste management, which has won countless awards for its first innovation: Repurpose Schoolbags. These are solar powered schoolbags, of which over 10,000 have been distributed across the Africa.
Through her efforts to make a dent in the world, she has been recognized on numerous platforms, including being named as a FORBES Africa 30under30 Honoree in 2017, “Innovator of the Year” by Forbes Women Africa in 2016, the Elle Magazine Impact award laureate across 6 continents, and in 2016 she became the youngest business woman at age 23, to appear on the cover of FORBES Women Africa.

Meet one of the speakers for the 2018 SAIIA KAS Careers Evening - Anele Mdoda
Anele is a South African radio DJ with 94.7 FM. She began her radio career as a DJ at the University of Pretoria in 2004, where she was studying Politics and International Relations. Anele was hired by Jo'burg radio station Highveld FM in 2007. She then went on to co-host the SABC2 reality competition SA's Got Talent, from 2009-2010. In 2016 she began hosting the SABC3 daytime talk show Real Talk, for which she received the ‘2017 South African Film and Television Award for best talk-show host’.
Anele is no stranger to awards and has also been named the ‘Best Radio Personality at the South African Nickolodean Kids Choice Awards’ and the ‘Most Stylish Personality in South Africa’.

The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) annually host a Careers Evening. The intention of the evening is to provide a platform for undergraduate and postgraduate University students in International Relations, Development Studies, Political Studies, Sociology, Economics, Law, Media and Journalism to gain a better understanding of the opportunities that are available to them. Our intention is to have a range of speakers and exhibitors attending this year’s event, including representatives from the media, business sector, various government agencies, as well as scholarship organisations.
