Vacancies

The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has a mandate, as outlined in the South African National Space Agency Act, 2008 (Act No 36 of 2008), to co-ordinate and integrate national space science and technology programmes and conduct long-term planning and implementation of space related activities in South Africa, for the benefit of the citizens of South Africa.
SANSA Space Operations is a Directorate of South African National Space Agency situated at Pretoria. SANSA Space Operations, located at Hartebeeshoek, is the primary driver for SANSA's state-of-the-art ground station facilities and services, including tracking, telemetry and communications activities, launch support, in-orbit testing, mission control and space navigation. This entity has the following contract vacancies to be filled by enthusiastic, hardworking individuals with the relevant skills, competencies and qualifications.
Satellite Operation Technicians (In-Service Trainees) (Ref no. SANSA07)
(Three positions)

The intern(s) in this role will be exposed to rendering TT&C (Tracking, Telemetry and Command) support services and satellite monitoring services to a host of international space agencies and satellite operators.
The successful candidates will: •Operate, maintain and /or monitor Radio Frequency (RF) and electronic equipment associated with satellite operations • Participate in TT&C operations which involves the rendering of ground segment services to SLV’s (Satellite launch vehicles) •Transfer-orbit operations, LEOP (launch and early-orbit operations)international clients • Keep abreast of operational system and equipment functionality, status and redundant capabilities •Keep abreast of operational system and equipment functionality, status and redundant capabilities.
The ideal candidates will have the following requirements: •N6 / S4 qualification with RF •Electronic or Satellite Technology course work with good academic results • In search of Field service training •Understanding of microwave principles, applications and telecommunications • Proficient in English language and good communication skills
Background verification, including criminal record, credit checks, security clearances, qualification and citizenship checks, as well as competency assessment and psychometric testing, will form part of the selection process.

FROM NUREMBERG TO KIGALI – SEEKING JUSTICE IN AFRICA

The Origins Centre hosts a lecture on entitled From Nuremberg to Kigali – seeking justice in Africa by Tali Nates, director of the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre. The list of human rights horrors on our continent goes on and on... Rwanda, Darfur, Sudan; names like Omar Al-Bashir and Liberia’s Charles Taylor. The lecture will explore different models of justice used in the wake of atrocities and genocide it will share testimonies and stories of survivors and perpetrators, and examine the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the Gacaca courts which ended recently in June. Nates has lectured internationally on genocide prevention, reconciliation and human rights. Born to a family of Holocaust survivors, her father and uncle were saved by Oskar Schindler.

DEAF AWARENESS MONTH

Deaf Awareness Month is celebrated internationally in September each year to create awareness of the needs of Deaf people and Sign Language – a language which uses hands and eyes to communicate, just as the spoken languages use the mouth and ears. Deaf people inhabit a world with no sound, so they speak with their hands instead. Deaf Awareness Month is about recognising the deaf people in our community as well as looking back at the achievements of pioneers in Deaf Culture. Wits Language School offers quality South African Sign Language (SASL) training as part of the Public Course Programme. The courses are run by Deaf trainers and are held on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 13:00. Click here for information on South African Sign Language courses.
