It is a shame to see that it is only now that the people of this country are stepping up, when the damage has already been done. The signs have been there for months, for years, yet we chose to ignore it because we feel that black leaders 'rescued us', yes they may have rescued us but they did not do it alone, they did it with the help of thousands of other people with the same objective as them. It saddens me to see how our people feel so indebted to black leaders to such an extent that when they mess up our first response is, "At least they took us out of Apartheid" I will never understand the pain black people went through during Apartheid, I may say I appreciate the struggles but I will never truly understand those struggles. But that does not mean I do not feel for those who went through these struggles, yes we should by all means learn from our past, but we should never let it hold us captive.
I'd like to make this example a teacher once made to our class: people who are afraid of snakes have never even come across a snake, they fear a snake because of what they have been told. This would explain why the young generation "burdens" themselves with what happened during Apartheid, and this is why they feel that they should continue with the war, because if they don't the snake might bite them, completely ruling out the possibility that that snake may never even strike.
The first problem is the people who took us out of those dark hours (the ANC) will forever have power over us because they know we are reluctant to go for second best because of our fears. They will end up abusing this power because it would clearly come across to them as if we don't have any alternatives.
Any political remarks are completely neutral, I'm not saying that people shouldn't vote for the ANC, but considering how much the scales are in their favour, accountability should then be considered highly by the people of this country.
As a country we should teach ourselves to hold our leaders to account no matter how small the matter is, because if we sit idly by while they break this country by small bits there will come a time ( if it hasn't already come) when these leaders will blatantly abuse their powers, going against the best interests of the people simply because they don't know what it is to be held to account by the people of the country.
When all is said and done, we have only ourselves to blame. When choosing our leaders looking back to decide should never be an option, we need to look much deeper into that individual's capability to steer this country to greater heights, and also how sincere they are about there approaches, I'm not at all saying we should disregard historic events and historic contributions of that particular person or party, but that alone should never be the reason why we entrust a particular person or party with ruling this country.
