If we don't know which qualifications are producing employment outcomes, how can we know whether our education system is preparing young people for the economy they are entering?
The problem, however, starts much earlier.
As highlighted by Dr Darius Sangari in his analysis of South Africaโs education landscape, our challenges include:
๐ Learning poverty: A large majority of children reach the age of 10 without being able to read and understand a simple text.
๐ Weak STEM foundations: Poor mathematics and science outcomes undermine our ability to develop the engineers, technicians and technologically skilled workforce that a modern economy requires.
๐ Learner attrition: The matric pass rate can hide the number of young people who have already fallen out of the education pipeline before reaching Grade 12.
๐A struggling TVET sector: South Africa desperately needs artisans and technical skills, yet vocational education continues to face challenges around enrolment, throughput and completion.
๐Educationโindustry disconnect: We continue to see young people leaving education with qualifications while industries struggle to find people with the practical and technical skills they need.
The solution cannot simply be more university places or higher pass rates.
We need an education system that connects school and skills to employment.
That means strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy, rebuilding STEM capability, making TVET education a respected first-choice pathway, expanding apprenticeships and work-integrated learning, and using technology to make practical training more accessible and effective.
For example, immersive technologies such as AR/VR welding simulation can give learners opportunities to practise technical skills in a safe, repeatable environment while complementing hands-on training.
Most importantly, industry must have a stronger role in shaping the skills pipeline.
The takeaway?
ยท A qualification is not the end goal.
ยท A pass rate is not enough. We need to measure what learners can actually do.
ยท TVET is not a second-choice education pathway. It is essential to South Africa's industrial future.
ยท And education policy must be informed by where graduates and skilled workers actually end up โ not simply by how many institutions enrol or graduate.
South Africa doesn't just need more educated people. We need an education system that produces people equipped to participate meaningfully in the economy once they graduate.
