Global Teachers Institute

Global Teachers Institute The Global Teacher’s Institute (GTI) wants to change the way we train teachers.

The Global Teachers Institute (GTI) is a teacher development platform working to produce high quality global teachers for South Africa's classrooms through mentorship and school based initial teacher education models. International research shows that teacher quality is the most significant factor affecting educational outcomes. However, training programs often misinterpret this by overemphasizing

skills and content, while overlooking the more personal dimensions that facilitate effective teaching. This creates teachers skilled in conveying content, but lacking the reflective capacity to understand the deeper purpose of their work. To solve educational inequality, the GTI believes that teachers must not only focus on instructional practice and skills acquisition, but also on facilitating personal transformation and setting a deeper meaning for their work. In response, the GTI aims to empower student teachers, current faculty, school leaders, and education organizations globally by refocusing teacher training and professional development on ideas of consciousness development and social change. To accomplish this, the GTI integrates skills-based training with material specifically emphasizing personal awareness, student emotional needs, and social responsibility. We aim to create educators who:

·Believe in open, honest engagement and having difficult conversations about the broader context of educational work.

·Prioritize self-awareness and self-reflection

·Confront their personal beliefs about learning, culture, and achievement and consider the moral and political questions that are enmeshed within education

·Frame their teaching practice through these reflections and understand its influence on their work.

Congratulations to GTI intern Sindile Precious Ndlovu and her learners from Eureka High School on an outstanding achievement at the Science Expo! 🥇🎓

Their project earned a Gold Medal, securing their place at the National Level of the competition. 👏✨

This achievement highlights the power of mentorship and the importance of creating opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge, develop problem-solving skills, and explore their potential in STEM. 🚀📚

Sindile’s support and guidance demonstrate how GTI Future Leaders can make an impact beyond the classroom - helping learners build confidence, pursue their interests, and strive for excellence.

As a Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellow, GTI joined Injini’s 2026 Engagement Week in KwaZulu-Natal, bringing together current and past EdTech Fellowship cohorts to learn from KHULA Education and schools in the region. 🌍🤝

Through group reflections, an interactive True, False or It Depends activity, and a panel discussion with education and community stakeholders, we explored the realities faced by teachers and learners in under-resourced schools.

The conversations reminded us that sustainable EdTech adoption starts with understanding context and community. Effective solutions require collaboration, evidence, and most importantly, listening to the people closest to the classroom.

✴️ Panel Discussion: Bridging the Implementation Gap
✴️ Panelists: Uhlangakazi • Umsinga Circuit Manager • KHULA Education • Umzinyathi District CES

🙌 We’re grateful to Injini and KHULA Education for creating spaces that encourage Fellows to learn from one another and connect innovation to real-world educational needs.

📚🌍 Learning from the classroom, to strengthen learning beyond it.

On 4 August, GTI staff joined the KHULA Education team and educators at a rural high school to gain firsthand insight into the realities, strengths, and challenges of teaching and learning in under-resourced communities.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to connect more deeply with Buddy Learning, an AI-powered learning platform and fellow of the Injini EdTech Fellowship, which uses WhatsApp to help learners understand concepts in their preferred language. 💡📱

As fellow members of the Injini community, the experience created valuable space for GTI and Buddy Learning to share perspectives and explore how accessible innovation can respond to real classroom needs. 🤝

Experiences like these remind us of the importance of listening to educators, understanding context, and connecting innovation to the realities of teaching and learning. 💛
