We spend the majority of our days at work, engaging with our colleagues. Difficult situations are part of corporate life and can lead to intense emotions—after all, you're only human. Here are 10 strategies to successfully handle emotions at work, helping you maintain professionalism and composure.
Compartmentalisation: Separate personal issues from work matters. Allocate time in the morning to mentally prepare for the day, leaving personal issues behind.
Deep Breathing and Relaxation: When overwhelmed, practice deep breathing or engage in activities like walking or listening to calming music to help manage feelings of anxiety or frustration.
The 10-Second Rule: Before reacting in anger or frustration, pause and count to ten. This can help you regain composure before addressing the issue.
Clarification: Always seek to clarify details before reacting, especially if the situation may stem from a misunderstanding.
Physical Exercise: Channel anger and frustration into physical activity, such as running or kickboxing. This helps release endorphins and reduce tension.
Pause Before Responding: Avoid making decisions or responding to communications in anger. Draft responses can be revisited once you are calmer.
Know Your Triggers: Recognize what typically upsets you so you can better prepare and manage your reactions in those situations.
Respectfulness: Maintain a respectful demeanour, even if others are rude. Keeping calm can often defuse tense situations. Be the bigger person. Always.
Apologise for Outbursts: If emotions get the better of you, apologise promptly, which can help in maintaining professional relationships.
Leave Work Emotions at Work: What happens at work stays at work. Release any negative feelings at the end of the workday to prevent them from affecting your home life.
