The General Secretary of the UN recently announced that only a mere 15 percent of the SDGs are on track to be achieved by 2030.
Nearly half—48 per cent—of the targets show moderate or severe deviations from the desired trajectory. Furthermore, over one-third—37 per cent—of these targets have experienced no progress or, even worse, have regressed below the 2015 baseline (UN, 2023)
This was enough to bring together Grit Lab Africa (Under Prof Jide at UJ) and CCentre For Emerging Researchers(under MMuimeleli Mutangwa to put together a first of its kind Research Hackathon on AI and SDGs, co-hosted with our brother and renowned Professor Oyelere from the University of Exeter (UK).
The hackathon attracted applications from junior and senior researchers and academics from 16 countries.
After a successful launch of the Hackathon Professor Fawole, Professor Jide and I (their Ice Boy) , full of optimism, held a small send off to our brother back to the UK. More info on this initiative coming up.
