In performance-oriented music education, performance skills are prioritized over traditional learning methods. The Afrocentric music curriculum emphasizes the styles, genres, abstractions, and ideas of African music, both indigenous and contemporary, making them central to the discourse. Evidently, the African musical and cultural landscape is filled with a multitude of songs with significant functions and meanings. Indigenous African music-making principles, conceptual underpinnings, and philosophical underpinnings are deeply embedded in the cultural and social milieu. As a result, an African-centered music program seeks to reify and discern the theoretical principles and praxis principles as perceived and understood through an African perspective.
