Happy 91st Birthday to the legendary pianist, composer, and innovator Abdullah Ibrahim! A titan of South Africa’s jazz scene, a keeper of many of the musical traditions of Cape Town, and an iconic piano master, Abdullah Ibrahim has developed an utterly singular sound and style over a career that has spanned nearly eight decades! Wielding a piano touch that echoes the influences of everything from Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington to the African Methodist Episcopal Church to Cape Town’s Kaapse Klopse, Ibrahim has also stood as South Africa’s greatest composer of the past century. Writing for solo piano, his trio, and his septet Ekaya, Ibrahim has developed an achingly rich and beautiful compositional voice that evokes his deep spiritual beliefs, his love of America’s and South Africa’s jazz traditions, as well as his embrace of South Africa’s Western Cape. In works like the immortal “Mannenberg,” these disparate strains of music weave together into some of the most singularly lyrical, beautiful, and grooving works of music history, telling a musical story that spans continents and oceans.
