Haute Lumiere Light Competition

Haute Lumière Light Competition challenges designers to rethink artificial light as a crucial aspect of design - promoting lighting as an inventive medium.

Idea:

Fashioned and designed environments require imaginative light solutions, which convey meaning, mood, atmosphere and visual appeal. The Haute Lumière Light Award was established by Paul Pamboukian in 2007 to explore and stimulate discussion on light as a design medium. The purpose of the award is to rethink artificial light as a crucial, primary aspect of design, to create unusual visibility

Sunrise Lamp - by Idalina Silva (finalist)

The desk lamp was envisioned as being used for those late nights when a calming light would be most welcome.
Inspired by the quality of the emitted sunlight at different times of the day. The luminaire has a cool midday white light, as a downward task light, and a warmer uplight, which creates a calming ambience, resembling the early morning sunlight.
In addition to this, an internal clock and a port for charging your phone has been integrated into it.

Guru - by Jon-Peer Bouwer (finalist)

This elegant floor standing lamp is designed for the user to have as much control over light as is needed. Being a Floor standing lamp, it leaves more space on your desk.
The light source can be rotated 360 degrees on its axis on the horizontal and vertical plane.
This feature is ingeniously accomplished by connecting the moving segments without cables, but with slip rings, electric brushes and the clever use of its internal components, such as pop rivets and bolts, to conduct electricity to the light source.

Egoist - by Deirdre Holtzer (finalist)

This is a portable mirror light which breaks current conventions with its innovative design.
The designer understands the difficulty of applying make-up in poorly lit environments, and decided to do something about it.
Comprised of L-shaped aluminium frames, which support a mirror.
LED striplights have been integrated into the frames to provide an even wash of light, with the optimum intensity and colour temperature.
The luminaire can be easily transported and stored: the two frames easily split, the mirror removed, and conveniently packed into a bag.

A massive congratulations to Bianca Barnard, winner of this year's Haute Lumiere Light Competition!
The design of her luminaire, Articulight, showed great originality and lateral thinking.
The adjustability of the different segments and the individual dimming of the light sources, allow it to be adapted to the user's needs, from a calming ambient light to a highly functional task light.
