Many years ago, during apartheid in South Africa, black children were forced to attend schools with fewer resources and opportunities than white children. In 1976, the government decided that Afrikaans, a language many students did not speak well, would be used as a language of instruction in schools.

On 16 June 1976, thousands of students in Soweto marched peacefully to protest this unfair rule. They carried signs, sang songs, and demanded a better education. However, the protest turned tragic when police opened fire on the students. Many young people were injured and killed, including a 13-year-old boy named Hector Pieterson.

The bravery of these students inspired people across South Africa and the world to stand against apartheid. Their courage became a symbol of the fight for freedom, equality, and quality education.

Today, South Africa celebrates Youth Day every year on 16 June to honor the young heroes of the Soweto Uprising and to remind everyone of the important role young people play in shaping the future.
