I will in Botswana this week to conduct some training in traffic safety. In the mean time my friends, drive safely and care about yourself and all other road users. Remember all the bad "D's" in road safety:
Drunk driving
Distracted driving (cell phones)
Drug driving
Drowsy driving (falling asleep)
Defective vehicles
Keep safe!!

Was in Ghana the past few days to conduct traffic training. Ghana's fatality rate is three times better than that of South Africa. This makes you think about road users here!
Will be conducting training in Ethiopia, Indonesia and Thailand over the next few weeks.
Hope to assist with solving some road safety issues there.
In Ghana this week to look at the traffic situation in Accra. Last week it was Addis Ababa. I have this idea that they are going to outperform us in terms of solving their crash rates.
I survived another week on the road to work and back. Johannesburg CBD filled with brain-dead drivers of the taxi-kind. Cannot believe that there are not more deaths on our roads. But hey - South Africa is currently one of only a few countries that do not collate accurate crash data. We are so bad in running our country.
To all my Friends. Take special care when you are on a public road. Think safety all the time and remember; we share the road with many idiots. Your holiday starts when you leave home!!!
I will be in New York next week at the United Nations Road Safety Conference. I have been invited to make a presentation on the challenges and opportunities for road policing in low and middle income countries. I hope we can convince the WHO and the UN to invest more in traffic enforcement in these countries.
I think Steve Hofmeyr should have apologised to South Africa for his indiscretion and not laughing on public TV. Speeding remains a serious issue. I do not consider this matter as something insignificant.
Latest tally - > 600 people died on our roads since the start of December. Keep safe my dearest friends. Think for everyone else on the road. Don't take any unnecessary risks. Merry Christmas to all.
My Dear Friends
December is notorious for crashes, fatalities and deaths. This festive season, please drive extra safely, keep to the speed limits, drive as though nobody sees you, think for other drivers and drive intoxicated. I do not want to read any bad things about any of you. South Africa has the second worst road safety record in Africa. It is dangerous out there!!!
The Road Traffic Management Corporation RTMC now wants to recommend that urban speed limits be reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h. This is ridiculous. We should rather legislate for 50km/h and increase or decrease speed limits on individual roads based on its safe use. The authorities are very silent on issues such as drivers ignoring traffic signals, overtaking recklessly, etc. Very little attention is given to moving violations except speeding. I don't think our law enforcement officers can identify moving violations or they are afraid to prosecute and then have to testify in open court.
