🌱 H**p Nation Greenhouse Project: Improving H**p Growth🌱

We’re excited to share the results from our Phase 2 Greenhouse Project on Mgadlela Farm! 🚜🌿 The goal?

To create a more controlled environment for h**p cultivation, reducing pollen contamination, minimizing pests, and improving germination success.

After months of work, the small shade-cloth greenhouse has shown great promise, although there’s still room for improvement. βœ… We’ve reduced pest problems, but male pollen contamination and humidity-related challenges still persist. The learning doesn’t stop here β€” we’re constantly adapting and improving!

πŸ’‘ Key Takeaways:

A small greenhouse helps increase seedling success.
Shadecloth reduces some pests, but we still need extra protection from rain.

Ongoing learning: The farmer’s hands-on involvement is crucial for success.

Real challenges: floor issues, pests, and male pollen, but we’re on the path to improvement.

This project isn't just for research β€” it's benefiting the Mgadlela farm, too! With plans for more greenhouses, we’re excited to continue improving and pushing the boundaries of sustainable farming practices. 🌍🌱

🌿 Project 2: First Grow HN1 - 8 (Unofficial) 🌿

https://h**pnation.group/project-2-first-grow-hn1-8-unofficial/ πŸ”—

We started our journey with seeds in the ground at a local farm to collect real data on growing conditions. Our goal? To test theories, document the growth cycle, and explore plant variation in Eswatini.

πŸ’‘ Key Findings:

Significant genetic variation among the plants

Unexpected losses due to pests and male pollen contamination
Winter growth resulted in reduced yields

THC levels were similar across plants (13-16%)

The project fostered new farming techniques and knowledge-sharing on fertilizers and methods. This is just the beginning! 🌱

🌱 Project 1: Sprouting and Compost Research 🌱

πŸ”— ⬇️ https://h**pnation.group/project-1-sprouting-and-compost-research/

We got our hands dirty and started experimenting with local seeds, compost, and fertilizers to see what works best for germination and transplanting. Here's a snapshot of our findings:

πŸ§ͺ Aims: Evaluate the impact of different growth mediums on seed germination and transplant success.

🌿 Results:

Best Medium: Pure compost had the highest success rate (100%).
Mixed Results: Combinations with manure were less effective.
Experiment Totals: 53 plants successfully transplanted.
🚜 Conclusion: Compost is excellent for starting seeds. Manure is too strong for early stages. More research is needed, but this method helps prevent seedling death and ensures healthy transplants.

How h**p can help save the planet from climate change.

H**p has the potential to play a significant role in mitigating climate change through various mechanisms:

Carbon Sequestration:
H**p plants have a high carbon sequestration capacity. During photosynthesis, they capture and store large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere in their biomass and soil. By cultivating h**p on a large scale, significant amounts of CO2 can be removed from the atmosphere, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Soil Regeneration:
H**p's deep root system helps improve soil health and structure. It reduces soil erosion, promotes water infiltration, and increases soil organic matter. Healthy soils contribute to increased fertility and enhance the land's capacity to absorb and store carbon.

Sustainable Alternative to Deforestation:
H**p can be an alternative to deforestation for various industries. For instance, using h**p fiber and biomass as substitutes for wood products, such as paper, construction materials, and biofuels, reduces the demand for tree-based resources.

Biomass and Bioenergy:
H**p can be cultivated for its biomass, which can be converted into renewable fuels, such as bioethanol and biodiesel. By replacing fossil fuel-based energy sources, h**p-based bioenergy can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What is the best way to help grassroots, small-scale, h**p and cannabis farmers in Southern Africa?

Here are a few suggestions:

Education and Training:
Help provide educational resources and training programs that focus on sustainable and responsible farming techniques specific to h**p and cannabis cultivation. This can include workshops, seminars, or mentorship programs to enhance their knowledge and skills.

Access to Capital:
Support initiatives that provide financial assistance to small-scale farmers, such as low-interest loans or grants. This can help them cover start-up costs, invest in proper equipment, or improve their infrastructure.

Advocacy and Legal Support:
Advocate for fair and supportive regulations pertaining to h**p and cannabis farming. This can involve lobbying for policy changes, supporting organizations that work towards legalization, and providing legal guidance to small-scale farmers.

Market Access and Networking:
Connect small-scale farmers with established buyers, distributors, and processors in the h**p and cannabis industry. Create platforms or networks that facilitate direct trade and bypass middlemen, ensuring farmers receive fair prices for their products.

Capacity Building and Infrastructure Development:
Assist in developing or improving vital infrastructure such as irrigation systems, drying facilities, storage units, and transportation networks. This can enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and help farmers efficiently reach markets.

Promote Sustainable Practices:
Encourage small-scale farmers to adopt sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices. This can include organic cultivation methods, water conservation techniques, and promoting biodiversity conservation on their farms.

Partnerships and Collaboration:
Foster partnerships between small-scale farmers, research institutions, and industry experts. This can facilitate knowledge exchange, technical support, and research collaborations, helping farmers improve their productivity and quality.
