Some guidance for schools and parents on whether to choose core Mathematics or Maths Lit 10/09/2025

When we talk about Maths or Maths Literacy in Grade 9, we forget that the decision starts long before high school.

Daily Maverick reminds us: a strong maths pass at matric begins in the early years, built on language, nutrition, and stimulation in the first 1,000 days.

This week, the Minister of Basic Education committed R10 billion to Early Childhood Development (ECD), recognising that you cannot “fix” weak foundations later. If we neglect the early years, remedial efforts are costly and often ineffective.

The science is clear. Neuroscience shows that early experiences wire the brain for problem-solving, creativity, and resilience. ECD is not childcare, it’s an investment that pays off for life.

At DSM Montessori, we nurture curiosity, independence, and confidence from the start. Because when foundations are strong, children don’t just succeed in maths, they succeed in life.

Some guidance for schools and parents on whether to choose core Mathematics or Maths Lit 08/09/2025

We often think the big decision is in Grade 9 — Maths or Maths Literacy?
But the truth is, that choice is shaped years earlier.

Research shows a quality maths pass at matric begins at conception and is built in the first 1,000 days of life.

Nutrition, language exposure, and early stimulation wire the brain for learning.

Neuroscience confirms that early experiences strengthen neural pathways that later support abstract thinking, problem-solving, and resilience.

By the time children reach Grade 9, their maths ability reflects the foundations laid in preschool and primary school.

This is why Early Childhood Development is not childcare — it’s an investment. The return shows up when your child faces complex concepts in high school and beyond.

At DSM Montessori, we nurture curiosity, independence, and confidence from the start. Because strong foundations don’t just prepare children for maths. They prepare them for life.

Why parenting is really all about neuroplasticity - Maggie Dent 03/03/2025

Parents, did you know your everyday interactions are literally reshaping your child's brain?

This fascinating article by Maggie Dent explains how the science of neuroplasticity confirms what we've always practiced at Different Strokes Montessori - that every child has remarkable potential to grow, adapt and overcome challenges with the right support.

Principal Zainab's own journey with her son Zubair is living proof of this truth. When doctors predicted limitations, her unwavering belief and Montessori approach helped unlock his potential instead.

At DSM, we create an environment where neuroplasticity thrives - where hands-on learning, individualized attention, and emotional safety give every child's brain the optimal conditions to develop.

Want to learn more about how we apply these principles? Visit us at Different Strokes Montessori in Norwood where we're continuing our 25+ year legacy of nurturing children's boundless potential.

Hands-On Learning: Exploring the Human Body

Our preschoolers are diving into a fascinating journey—learning about the human body through hands-on activities!

Placing teeth in playdough helps them understand dental structure and the importance of healthy teeth.

Practicing dental care teaches them how to brush and take care of their smiles.

Sticking gum paper into a stomach diagram makes digestion fun and visual.

Building a body from recycled materials sparks creativity while reinforcing anatomy.

Through these activities, they develop curiosity, fine motor skills, and an early appreciation for health and self-care. Montessori learning brings science to life!

Mastering independence, one dressing frame at a time!

Our preschoolers have been hard at work with Montessori dressing frames in our practical life area:

👕 Buttoning – Strengthening fine motor skills and patience.
🧥 Zipping – Encouraging hand-eye coordination and dexterity.
🔗 Hook and eye – Building focus and problem-solving skills.

These hands-on activities boost confidence and competence in daily life. The bonus? They can now dress themselves—no more morning struggles for Mum!

STEAM Experiment: Exploring Colors with Smarties!

Science comes alive in our Montessori classroom! Our preschoolers explored color mixing with a simple yet exciting experiment. They placed colorful Smarties in water and watched as the colors slowly spread and blended.

This hands-on activity sparked curiosity, encouraged observation, and introduced basic scientific concepts. Through play, they learned about diffusion and how colors mix to create new shades.

STEM in early childhood lays the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving. Plus, it’s pure fun!

Sensory Play: Learning Through Exploration

Our preschoolers are diving into sensory play—scooping, squishing, pouring, and exploring textures. These hands-on experiences engage their senses, spark curiosity, and build essential skills.

Sensory play strengthens fine motor control, encourages creativity, and supports cognitive growth. It also helps children develop focus and emotional regulation through play.

In Montessori, we believe learning should be a full-body experience. When children touch, feel, and explore, they build connections that last a lifetime.

Hands-On Learning with Montessori Math

Our preschoolers are building a strong math foundation with hands-on materials. They’re exploring numbers with beads and counters, working with the spindle box, and mastering quantity with number rods.

Through writing numbers and adding in the teens, they develop a deep understanding of math concepts. Each activity turns abstract ideas into something real and touchable.

In Montessori, math is not just about numbers—it’s about discovery, confidence, and a love for learning.

Building Skills for Life

Our preschoolers are busy with practical life activities—pouring, scooping, tweezing, and more. These simple tasks build fine motor skills, independence, and confidence. Each movement strengthens little hands for future writing, while every success nurtures self-reliance.

In Montessori, practical life is more than just play. It’s preparation for real life. Through hands-on learning, children gain coordination, concentration, and a sense of responsibility.

When children master everyday tasks, they believe in themselves. And that belief is the foundation for all learning.
