Marks: 150 Marks
Answer ALL questions
Consists of:
*Multiple choice questions
*Terminology
*Data response questions
*Genetics calculations
*Paragraph questions
MAIN TOPICS IN PAPER 2
1. DNA: THE CODE OF LIFE. Focus on:
-Structure of DNA
-DNA replication
-RNA
-Protein synthesis
-DNA profiling
2. MEIOSIS. Focus on:
-Stages of meiosis
-Importance of meiosis
-Genetic variation
-Differences between meiosis and mitosis
3. GENETICS AND INHERITANCE Focus on:
-Monohybrid crosses
-Dihybrid crosses
-Blood grouping
-Sex-linked inheritance
-Pedigree diagrams
-Genetic engineering
-Mutations
4. EVOLUTION. Focus on:
-Darwin's theory
-Lamarck's theory
-Natural selection
-Speciation
-Evidence for evolution
-Human evolution
-Out of Africa Hypothesis
MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS
Genetics
Usually carries many marks.
Practice:
*Punnett squares
*Probability questions
*Pedigree diagrams
Very important in final examinations.
Know:
Evidence for evolution
Natural selection
Human evolution
DNA & Protein Synthesis
Frequently tested with diagrams and sequences.
STUDY TIPS TO PASS PAPER 2
1. MASTER THE DIAGRAMS
Study diagrams of:
-DNA structure
-DNA replication
-Protein synthesis
-Meiosis
-Human evolution skulls
-Pedigree charts
2. PRACTICE GENETICS EVERY DAY
Many learners lose marks because they:
Forget gametes
Use incorrect symbols
Skip genetic ratios
Always show:
*Parents (P₁)
*Gametes
*Punnett square
*Genotypes
*Phenotypes
3. MEMORISE DEFINITIONS
Examples:
Allele
Gene
Phenotype
Genotype
Mutation
Natural selection
Speciation
Definitions are often tested directly.
4. LEARN PROCESSES IN ORDER
Know the correct sequence for:
Protein Synthesis
Transcription
mRNA formation
Translation
Protein formation
Natural Selection
Variation
Competition
Survival
Reproduction
Passing favourable traits
Examiners award marks for correct sequence.
5. PRACTICE PAST PAPERS
Use:
DBE past papers
Trial examinations
Provincial papers
Memorandums
Many question styles repeat every year.
6. SHOW ALL GENETICS WORKING
Even if the final answer is wrong, you can still earn method marks.
Never skip steps.
7.ANSWER EVOLUTION QUESTIONS CAREFULLY
Common mistake:
Learners write general facts instead of explaining natural selection.
Always connect:
Variation
Advantage
Survival
Reproduction
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
❌ Confusing genotype and phenotype
❌ Mixing meiosis and mitosis
❌ Forgetting labels on DNA diagrams
❌ Incorrect genetic symbols
❌ Memorising without understanding
❌ Ignoring evolution questions
FINAL ADVICE
To pass Life Sciences Paper 2:
✅ Understand concepts, don't only cram facts
✅ Practice genetics calculations regularly
✅ Memorise biological terms and definitions
✅ Revise evolution thoroughly
✅ Complete as many past papers as possible
✅ Learn diagrams and processes step-by-step
The learners who practice genetics, evolution and past papers consistently usually perform much better in Paper 2.
