The University of Johannesburg continues to deepen its global engagement, building on its recognition as a leading institution in Africa across multiple international rankings.
On 19 February 2026, UJ Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi, hosted His Excellency Mr Jean Robert Pillard, Ambassador of the Republic of Haiti to South Africa, at the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus. The meeting explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration between UJ and universities in Haiti.
Discussions identified potential areas of partnership, including academic cooperation and innovation. Ambassador Pillard expressed particular interest in the work of UJ’s Rescue Simulation Centre, whose members were deployed to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake and more recently to Mozambique during flood relief efforts.
The engagement reflects UJ’s continued commitment to international collaboration, knowledge exchange and societal impact.

What started as a casual conversation turned into a boundary-pushing artistic journey.
Curated by Dr Orton, Toor|Bos merges visual art and technology through virtual reality, transforming the works of celebrated artists Jaco van Schalkwyk and Willem Boshoff into multisensory physical and virtual installations. The VR experience, developed by Dr Myburgh, brought audiences into a fully immersive artistic world, blurring the lines between reality and imagination.
A shining example of transdisciplinary collaboration and creative innovation at the University of Johannesburg.

Letlhokwa George Mpedi, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg, and Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and UN Under-Secretary-General, recently co-authored a thought-provoking opinion article published in the Mail & Guardian.
They argue that the constructive resolution of labour disputes is key to maintaining labour peace and stability — but in light of growing disillusionment with existing structures like the CCMA, there is a need to reimagine our approach.
Could artificial intelligence offer new pathways for fairness and efficiency in South Africa’s labour dispute resolution processes? Their piece explores this possibility, urging us to consider innovative, tech-driven solutions to uphold workers’ rights in a changing world.
