🏆 FOUR YEARS AT THE TOP 🧡

For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Johannesburg has been ranked South Africa's leading producer of accredited research outputs according to the Department of Higher Education and Training's (DHET) Sector Report on the Evaluation of the 2024 Universities' Research Outputs.

Why has UJ remained number one for four consecutive years?

Because of sustained investment in research excellence, innovation and impact. Through world-class research infrastructure, digital capabilities, laboratories, postgraduate training, strong academic support systems, international collaboration and the development of emerging researchers, UJ has built a research ecosystem that consistently delivers results.

In 2024, UJ produced 3,513 accredited research output units and contributed 13.52% of South Africa's total accredited research output, meaning more than one in every eight research outputs generated nationally originated from UJ.
Four years at the top reflects more than productivity. It reflects a commitment to research that is relevant, impactful and responsive to society's needs.

Department of Optometry at University of Johannesburg celebrated International Albinism Awareness Day, on 13 June under the 2026 theme, 'Proudly in my skin- celebrating all skin tones', as part of its many societal impact initiatives. International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) was established by the United Nations to raise awareness about albinism. Due to a lack of melanin in the skin and eyes, persons with albinism often have permanent visual impairment. They also face discrimination due to their skin colour and often subject to multiple and intersecting discrimination on the grounds of both disability and colour. To signify and support the importance of this day, the Department of Optometry undertook to test patients with albinism from mid-May up until 6 June and provide the beneficiaries with free eye exams and spectacles. A handover of spectacles were carried out at the UJ Optometry Clinic at Doornfontein Campus.
