KIDS VISION

The use of digital screen time is linked to development of myopia in children and teenagers. Excessive digital screen time is also linked to dry eye syndrome, digital eyestrain, and poor head and neck postures which can cause pain.

A talk on the radio – ‘it’s predicted by matric, most students will have [myopia].
Myopia, often called short-sightedness or near-sightedness, is a condition of the eyes that results in blurry long-distance vision. A person with myopia can see clearly up close, such as when reading a book or looking at a phone, while distant objects like store signs or television screens may appear blurry or hard to read.

Children are also using digital devices often for school and entertainment. While digital devices have brought many benefits, they can pose some drawbacks too. Take eye health and vision as an example. The increase in screen time can cause many problems, including myopia or nearsightedness.

‘Pediatricians generally recommend the following guidelines:
Under 2 years old: Zero screen time, except for video chatting with family or friends. 2-5 years old: No more than one hour per day co-viewing with a parent or sibling.
5-17 years old: Generally no more than two hours per day, except for homework. Yousuf

The speaker on the radio station gave a simple suggestion to parents, of making sure their children/teens get up and take a rest from the screen, to go outside and look at things far away – eye exercise…

As we start a new academic year 2024, let's take time to appreciate the teachers.
