Mimosa School

Mimosa School Mimosa is a preprimary and foundation phase Reggio Emilia inspired school in Auckland Park, Joburg. Mimosa opened in 1996 as Mimosa Montessori.

We first encountered the Reggio Emilia approach in 2013 and were inspired to test out a few aspects of the approach – particularly the move to longer-term investigations – alongside the Montessori curriculum. In 2017 we agreed to pack away the Montessori materials and embrace the Reggio Emilia approach fully. We’ve been amazed at the transformation – in ourselves and in the children – as we start to see ourselves and each other as creative, thoughtful, critical, collaborative and socially responsive citizens. And we have been inspired to extend this socio-constructivist approach to learning into our recently opened foundation phase. In 2017 we started Grade 1 as the first step in the implementation of a Reggio Emilia-inspired foundation phase. It has proven to be a really exciting investigation into how we can meet the demands of the CAPS curriculum while embracing and practicing the Reggio philosophy in each encounter. As of 2020 we have Grades 1, 2 and 3, with hopes of expanding up.

Taking young audiences to the theatre is a magical experience. Both our grade R class and Grade 00 class had the opportunity to go see The Boy and The Ball at the Market Theatre last week as part of the ASSITEJ South Africa Cradle of Creativity.

The Rainbows class (Gr 00) bumped into our friends from Bekezela Creche and enjoyed the show with them.

Thank you to alumni parent Kyla who made it possible for us to go.

The Mimosa Canopy Project started with a question about our alleyway: who has permission to belong here?

That question grew into six months of stitching, connecting and reimagining a shared space — bringing together 24 parents, alumni, teachers and current pupils, along with a class visit from the Imbali Visual Literacy Programme. Piece by piece, crocheted mandalas were hand-stitched at home and combined into a canopy now hanging above our school entrance in the alleyway.

A special thank you to teacher Ann Simmonds, who led this project and brought this vision to life, along with everyone who contributed their time, hands and creativity.

Thank you also to Arthur Bales Pty and Mark Schaerer for their materials and expertise.

Come and see it for yourself in the alleyway. 🧡

What wonderful neighbours we have. We lost power at our foundation phase school today just when our groups had done some mixing of batter to bake.

So we knocked next door to our neighbours at the Twickenham Guest House and they offered to pop them in their ovens for us.

Thanks you kind neighbours
