Mimosa is a preprimary and foundation phase Reggio Emilia inspired school in Auckland Park, Joburg. Mimosa opened in 1996 as Mimosa Montessori.

We first encountered the Reggio Emilia approach in 2013 and were inspired to test out a few aspects of the approach – particularly the move to longer-term investigations – alongside the Montessori curriculum. In 2017 we agreed to pack away the Montessori materials and embrace the Reggio Emilia approach fully. We’ve been amazed at the transformation – in ourselves and in the children – as we start

Our Grade 1 - 3 classes hold a regular assembly where they discuss issues affecting them but also the wider community . Building connections and solving social issues is an important skill they are learning .

These incredible posters they made as part of their June 16th March .

Blossoms in the Mimosa Preschool garden .

Our grade R class have been drawing a weekly progression of our fruit trees as they blossom and their shadows change.

Our 3 - 5s had an isiZulu class making ‘izimbali’ out of marshmallows while also using this interesting texture to practice their cutting and vula/ vala.

At Bokanang, we have been thinking about how to mark South African Women’s Day... Some children wanted to make a sign on the school gate. Some children wanted to build the women’s march to the Union Building out of LEGO and blocks. While others wanted to create a show to reenact part of the march.

The children of Mimosa strongly believe that “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo”💪🏽🇿🇦

The wonderful Joburg weather today just drew everyone at the Mimosa Preschool into the garden. Our 3 - 4 year olds were planting seeds as part of their enquiry (while singing their own class made song in English and isiZulu about “I am a plant, please take care of me"). Our grade R class has been exploring shadows and wanted to know why the shadows from the trees were more defined now than earlier in the year and set out to look at various trees and shadows to explore some ideas.
Our class of 2- 3 year olds had seen some potatoes in the compost yesterday and were determined that they were eggs! They went exploring in the Green Atelier to look for the chickens. The 4 -5 year olds went on a walk around the school stopping at the bee tree, and came back to paint something they had stopped to look at in their thinking books.

Want to see more of this garden where children play and explore? Our next Open Day is on the 29th August from 10:00-12:00.

Monday mornings at Mimosa look a bit like this. Children of different ages work in groups to take care of our school. Planting, caring for our guinea pigs, beautifying the garden and cooking a snack to share.
Our recycling group is also trying to find ways to reuse things we find and this week we found some lintels that had been dumped that we are going to make into an alleyway marble run.

Our overarching research theme for the year is ‘re-imagining our environment’ and while this means each class has been exploring this in their own way the children have been reimagining the garden . Construction in the sandpit and with our loose parts over the past months has seen many different houses / dens / spaces being built.

Mimosa is a pre-primary and foundation phase school where children are curious and active participants in life and learning - for families with a vision of a more just and inclusive future.

Joy. Inquiry. Belonging. Reggio-inspired.
