We thought that you would like to take a look at the ‘Maria Montessori’ tulips that are blooming in AMI’s small garden. They were named after Maria Montessori to celebrate her 150th birthday and since then we have heard from many friends around the that they have bloomed, on balconies, in window boxes, in gardens — in many countries. The tulips form a loving circle around the small statuette of Maria which is a miniature replica of the larger than life statue by Victor Gutiérrez, one of Mexico’s most well known sculptors. The original is located at the Centro Internacional Villa Montessori, in Morelia. Maria Montessori holds the 1000 cube in her left hand, and holds out her right hand for a small dove to land, the symbol of . To all of you, wherever you may be, we are thinking of you as you continue to work towards Maria Montessori’s vision of a more world.

On 24 January 2022, we celebrate the fourth International Day of Education under the theme “Changing Course, Transforming Education”. As it was detailed in UNESCO’s recent global Futures of Education report, transforming the future requires an urgent rebalancing of our relationships with each other, while raising serious concerns for equity, inclusion and democratic participation. This year’s International Day of Education will be a platform to showcase the most important transformations that have to be nurtured to realize everyone’s fundamental right to education and build more sustainable, inclusive and peaceful futures.

How well this resonates with Maria Montessori’s words, ‘If we are to develop a system of scientific pedagogy, we must, then, proceed along lines very different from those which have been followed up to the present time. The transformation of the school must be contemporaneous with the preparation of the teacher. For if we make of the teacher an observer, familiar with the experimental methods, then we must make it possible for her to observe and to experiment in the school. The fundamental principle of scientific pedagogy must be, indeed, the liberty of the pupil;—such liberty as shall permit a development of individual, spontaneous manifestations of the child's nature. If a new and scientific pedagogy is to arise from the study of the individual, such study must occupy itself with the observation of free children.’ (The Montessori Method, Chapter 2)
