Every year on 16 June, we commemorate Youth Day, a significant occasion that honours the courage and sacrifice of young people who fought for equal education and freedom during
apartheid.
Youth Day marks the anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, when thousands of school
learners in Soweto protested against the government’s decision to enforce Afrikaans as a primary language in schools, putting many learners at a severe disadvantage, worsening
existing tensions and inequalities. On 16 June 1976, the peaceful protest was met with violence by police, resulting in the deaths of many young people. One of the most well-known images
from that day is of 13-year-old Hector Pieterson, whose death became a symbol of the struggle against apartheid. The bravery shown by the students increasing rebellion and showing the immense power held by youth.
It is a reminder of the power of young people to bring about positive change in society. The
learners of 1976 demonstrated courage, determination, and a commitment to justice, which we strive to emulate at St Mary’s.
As we commemorate Youth Day, we honour the sacrifices of those who came before us while
recognising the important role that today’s youth play in shaping the future.
Whether through
education, leadership, community service or innovation, young people have the ability to make a lasting difference.
Let us use this Youth Day as an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our youth and to continue building a brighter, more inclusive South Africa for future generations.
