One of the richest symbols of the Christian faith is the image of the Madonna and Child. At St Mary’s, we have various artworks of the Madonna and Child all around our campus and in the chapel.
There is a deep familiarity to this image. It is an image that is meant to transcend its immediate context - from Madonna and Child to any mother and child. In 1956, women marched with babies on their backs, holding children by the hand, to demand freedom from a law that divided their families. The pass laws destroyed one of society’s most sacred institutions - the family. This remains one of our nation’s deepest wounds.
Lilian Ngoyi, like many women who were part of the struggle and the women’s march in 1956, identified themselves as mothers, not just women. She also made the comment “the main thing is we do not want to discriminate. As mothers a child is a child”(Lilian Ngoyi Papers, typescript autobiography).
These artworks around campus serve as a prompt for prayer; to give thanks for family (community) and to continue healing the bonds that were and are broken.

Today was a good day for our our basketball girls. We found the fire in our souls and fought harder on the court.
We are proud of the team for attacking the day and making the most of it!
A real highlight was watching our very own coach Emma play in the coaches vs refs game this afternoon. Needless to say, coach Emma owned her space with authority!

From rubbish to runway.
Our Form I Visual Arts students transformed recyclable materials into extraordinary wearable artworks for the annual STAMP Festival Trashion Show. Inspired by conversations around the environmental impact of fast fashion, they combined creativity, ingenuity and problem-solving to create garments with a powerful message.
A wonderful celebration of art, design and sustainability.
