Heritage Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the traditions, languages, histories and cultural identities that make our country so rich and diverse.

At the University of Johannesburg, we understand that our heritage is not only something we inherit, but something we continue to shape together. By embracing inclusivity, encouraging mutual understanding and respecting different perspectives, we contribute to a university community where everyone can feel a sense of belonging.

This Heritage Day, we also celebrate the natural wonders that form an essential part of our shared identity. Hoepie and the VC have recorded a special Heritage tribute at the Kruger National Park, marking 100 years of this iconic South African destination.

𝐔𝐉 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐃𝐚𝐲 2026: 𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 21 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 🧡

Earlier today, the Division for Global Engagement team, led by Senior Director Prof. Bhaso Ndzendze, joined colleagues across the University of Johannesburg for UJ Staff Day 2026 – a vibrant annual celebration of our shared journey and the impact we continue to create together.

As part of the festivities, we proudly hosted the UJ Global Impact Masterchef Bistro, in partnership with RDS, SIA, and PGS. The bistro brought colleagues together over great food and even greater company, embodying the spirit of collaboration and community that defines who we are.

This year is especially significant as we celebrate 21 years of impact – 21 years of shaping futures, building global connections, and serving with purpose. Here's to the people who make it all possible: our staff. 🧡

Today, the University of Johannesburg had the honour of hosting a delegation from the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, led by Prof. Li Junfeng, Executive Deputy Secretary of the Education Working Committee of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by our Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Letlhokwa Mpedi, and the Senior Director of the Division for Global Engagement, Prof. Bhaso Ndzendze.

The visit focused on exploring collaborative opportunities between Beijing's higher education institutions and UJ. Discussions centred around key areas of mutual interest, including digital education, vocational education, joint research, international Chinese education, China-South Africa people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and the Study-Beijing program.

We look forward to building on these conversations to foster deeper academic partnerships, knowledge exchange, and mutual growth between our institutions.

Thank you to Prof. Li Junfeng and the delegation, alongside our colleagues from the Embassy of China, for a productive and engaging visit! 🧡

The Division for Global Engagement was honoured to welcome Dr. Andreas Kosmider, Managing Director of the Falling Walls Foundation, to the University of Johannesburg. He was warmly received by Ms. Anisa Khan (Director: Academic Services) and Ms. Refilwe Moleyane (Director: Study Abroad & International Student Services).

The Falling Walls Foundation is a global platform connecting universities, researchers, innovators, governments, and businesses around scientific breakthroughs and their translation into societal impact. Dr. Kosmider’s visit explored how this international network might connect more systematically with South African and wider African institutions.

A key focus of the discussions was the emerging idea to establish an African Science Leadership Forum – a platform that could strengthen African scientific networks, develop international research and funding partnerships, and increase the visibility and influence of African science within global knowledge networks.

We also explored immediate opportunities for UJ’s engagement with the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin in November 2026, alongside longer-term possibilities for institutional partnerships, researcher and innovation networks, and greater international visibility for UJ’s areas of research strength.

We look forward to building on these conversations and deepening our connection with the Falling Walls community. 🧡

Congratulations to Prof. Bhaso Ndzendze on His Professorial Inauguration!

The Division for Global Engagement proudly celebrates our Senior Director, Prof. Bhaso Ndzendze, on his professorial inauguration, which took place on Tuesday, 8 September 2026 at the UJ Kingsway Campus.

In his inaugural lecture, Prof. Ndzendze explored the concept of sovereignty in Africa, highlighting its three distinct versions – presidential, territorial, and popular – and examining why full-scale interstate wars remain rare on the continent. . His address was a testament to his depth of scholarship, intellectual rigour, and unwavering commitment to understanding the complexities of African politics and international relations.

Prof. Ndzendze is a Full Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations, UJ Faculty of Humanities and the Senior Director: Division for Global Engagement. His academic journey – from being appointed Head of Department at just 25 years old - to now holding a full professorship – is nothing short of inspiring.

We are incredibly proud to have such a dynamic leader, scholar, and visionary at the helm of the DGE. Please join us in congratulating Prof. Ndzendze on this well-deserved milestone! 🧡

🔶 Strengthening Partnerships in Zimbabwe 🔶

The Division for Global Engagement delegation, led by Ms. Ntombi Mangqase (Director: Fundraising & Administration) and Mr. Tshidiso Konese (Director: International Student Recruitment), had a productive and impactful visit in Zimbabwe, engaging with key stakeholders to forge meaningful collaborations that advance education, leadership, and economic development.

We met with the Zimbabwe Presidential Scholarship Office for productive discussions around finalizing a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and exploring new cohort modalities – strengthening our commitment to supporting bright young minds from Zimbabwe.
