Today I’m thinking of the grade 3 girl in my class who was sexually assaulted by her uncle. A man who was entrusted to protect and care for her.
I’m thinking of the grade 3 boy in my class who told me when his dad drinks he gets beaten, along with his mom. I’m thinking of when I went to the police station to report it and they said “we don’t do those kinds of cases here.”
I’m thinking of a boy in my youth group who had to watch his mom being beaten by his dad multiple times.
I’m thinking of my social media feed, constantly filled with murder, r**e and violence.
I’m thinking of the times I’ve been followed home (yes, timeS). The times I’ve worried about my sister, my mom, my friends. The times I’ve walked with keys between my fingers, hyper vigilant of my surrounding. The times I’ve psyched myself out of simply going for a walk in my neighbourhood because of fear.
I’m thinking of YOU and all that you’ve had to endure as a woman in this country.
