Life Orientation, but make it move 💃

Last term, our Squeakers were challenged to get their friends together and get moving - and they definitely understood the assignment!

From dancing and yoga to archery and everything in between, they explored just how many different ways there are to be active.

Because exercise doesn’t have to look like laps around a field. Find something you enjoy, grab your friends and MOVE! 🙌

If you know Mareli, you probably know there’s one historical figure she could talk about for hours: Eva Perón 🇦🇷

Growing up with the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina was practically a nursery rhyme. Then came the 1996 film adaptation of Evita - and an obsession that would last for the next 30 years.

She watched the film on the big screen more times than she can remember and spent hours in Exclusive Books reading everything she could find about this legendary, complicated and often controversial woman.

For Mareli, the fascination has always gone beyond the glamour and the history.

Evita had an extraordinary connection with ordinary people. She listened to those who often went unheard, advocated for women, invested in education and helped build schools. She understood the power of making people feel seen.

So, on Mareli’s recent trip to Argentina, getting to walk the streets of Buenos Aires and experience the places she had read about for three decades was pretty special.

She stayed barely 100 metres from Evita’s final resting place, spoke to Argentinians about the woman who had fascinated her for so long, and spent an entire morning at Museo Evita - where the staff apparently realised very quickly that this was not your average tourist. 😂

Thirty years of fascination, finally experienced in person.

Safe to say, this one was a bucket-list moment for Mareli.

Viva Evita! 🇦🇷

Meet the Squad 💛

The humans behind Squeaker Squad - here to understand different brains, celebrate different strengths, and help every child find their way.

Mareli Thalwitzer: Our Squad Leader! Never ever call her a principal. She will give you the side-eye like a llama. Jack of all trades - master on none, BUT she is the BEST motivational speaker ever. And yes - she does call us to action. We WORK, we motivate each other, we change our behaviour, sit and wait for our first speech of the day every morning.

Mckayla Kitshoff: A math wizard that can whizz through our math challenges like a formula one race driver. She’s cool, collected and laps around the centre like a phantom.

Natasha Genis: The Kruger Park has the big 5, we have the big 6 with Tannie Natasha. She can do all the big 6 subjects. Math, Science, Biology, Accounting, English and Afrikaans. She’s the sporty mom and always the first to cheer us on when we play basketball or dance on the stoep. (Which we do a lot.)

Salome Roodt: A shield maiden. The one that protects, fights for us, who shields us from panic attacks and other monsters that hide under our beds.

Lucinda Windvogel: More than just an assistant!
Lucinda is also an aspiring student who’s going to join our FET group next year to complete her formal studies. She is always ready with a smile, a hug and to jump in and work with us.

Salome Badenhorst: In just three months, we’ll officially be able to call her “Teacher” - and shortly after that, she’ll be a married lady too!

For now, though, she is our art inspiration and the talent we all aspire to achieve. You should see our artwork and our marks - they speak for themselves and are definitely worth mentioning.

Brain breaks > brain overload

Exam season has been tough, and sometimes the best thing your tween can do for their studying… is stop studying for a few minutes.

A good brain break can help reset focus, reduce overwhelm and make it easier to get back to the books.

Try:

- 5–10 minutes of movement
- Step outside for some fresh air
- Grab a snack + water
- Stretch, dance or kick a ball around
- Put on ONE favourite song
- Do something completely unrelated to school

The goal isn’t to study for hours on end. It’s to help their brain stay regulated enough to actually take the information in. 💛

Some kids thrive in structure. Others need movement. More time. Less noise. A different way in.

The goal was never to make every brain learn the same way.

It’s to find the way their brain learns best 💛

How to regulate an overstimulated tween 🧠💛

When their nervous system is overloaded, more talking, more questions and more instructions can quickly become more noise.

Instead, try:

- Lower the noise and stimulation
- Use fewer words and a calm voice
- Give them space (if that’s what they need)
- Reduce demands that can wait
- Offer familiar comforts - headphones, a hoodie, a quiet spot
- Let them move, pace, rock or simply be still

And remember: regulate first, reason later.

The conversation can wait until their nervous system is ready for it.

Why does Term 3 feel SO full? 😮‍💨📚

Tasks. Projects. Orals. Assessments. Presentations.

If it feels like everything has landed at once, there’s actually a very good reason for it.

Term 3 is an important opportunity for children to explore what they enjoy, what comes naturally to them, and where their interests may lie - in ways that go beyond simply writing a test.

A project might uncover a love for research.
An oral might reveal a confident communicator.
A practical task might light up the child who struggles to show what they know on paper.

These different forms of assessment give children the chance to experience learning in more practical ways and, as they get older, begin discovering the subjects, skills and interests that may eventually help guide their career choices.

So yes… Term 3 is jam-packed. And for some of our neurodivergent kiddos, that workload can feel particularly overwhelming.

But underneath all those projects, posters and speeches, something really valuable is happening:

They’re learning a little more about who they are, what they enjoy, and where they might one day want to go. 💛
