Tucked away in the verdant Kwazulu-Natal Midlands, near the sparkling Midmar Dam lies a hidden gem.
From the outside a nondescript white wall hides a well-kept, family-run, 4 star country hotel, with beautiful gardens, a private chapel, award winning à la carte dining room, 27 fully appointed bedrooms and conference facilities. When you enter through the glass panel double doors, a roaring fire and friendly faces welcome you and thereafter look after you with warm country hospitality.
This hidden gem is also the home of a privately owned and fully accredited hotel school offering courses in both Hotel Management and Professional Cookery.
The training college has been in operation for the last 20 years and takes no more than 30 students divided amongst the disciplines of Hotel Management and Professional Cookery. Students do their practical training within the Hotel Departments alongside the qualified assessors and staff trainers and experience the normal everyday routine of each department.
The motto of the school is “striving for the ultimate in service excellence” and every day the team works on developing each student to realise their full potential. Lectures and demos are held daily in the fully equipped demo kitchen and regular excursions and presentations by external guest lecturers and business owners add quality to the students’ education.
Fern Hill offers a holistic approach to training students. The belief is that students come to Fern Hill not only to develop their Hospitality skills but also to grow as young adults into mature and responsible future leaders of industry. Every student is recognized as an individual and training methods are adapted to accommodate each student’s capabilities.
It is this philosophy that largely contributes to Fern Hill’s success rate. Most of Fern Hill’s ex-students have gone on to work overseas for prestigious hotel groups and resorts, and on yachts and cruiseships on the world’s oceans. Some of the top executives in today’s hotels were trained at Fern Hill.
Accommodation for students is provided on-site, and includes three wholesome meals a day as well as laundry and weekly room cleaning. Various recreation facilities are available for the students during their off-times and include a tennis court, swimming pool, computers with wi-fi access and DSTV in the student lounge.
Fern Hill Hotel Training College is internationally recognised and accredited by City and Guilds, CATHSSETA, SAQA and SACA to name but a few. Fern Hill also enjoys affiliation with various industry associations. Employers are often enquiring about students past and present as Fern Hill has gained an unsurpassed reputation for training capable, passionate and extraordinary students
