*Q&A: Matric Upgrading in Howick โ Whatโs Changing & What It Means for You*
_Part 2: Practical questions learners and parents are asking_
*Q1: Why canโt I just register in April like before?*
*A:* The DBE exam registration deadline is March. After that, the system closes for that year. In the past, some centres accepted late registrations and rushed the work. From 2027, we wonโt. With only one exam series per year and a 50-learner cap, we need the full cycle to teach properly. Registering in April means youโre already a year behind.
*Q2: How does the syllabus change affect me if I wait?*
*A:* The DBE revises prescribed texts and content every year. In English, a novel you studied in 2024 wonโt be examined in 2026. In Physical Science, practical weightings shift. If you wait 2 years, youโre not revisingโyouโre learning new content with less time. Early registration locks you into the current syllabus and gives you time to master it.
*Q3: What if I only failed one subject? Do I still need to start in July 2026?*
*A:* Yes, if you want to use the final May/June intake in 2027. For the October-November 2027 exams, we recommend starting in July 2026. One subject still needs practice papers, timed tests, and revision. A 3-month rush rarely produces a pass. The learners who improve fastest are the ones who start early and treat it like a full subject.
*Q4: What did the Centre offer before that was different from other places?*
*A:* Three things:
1. *Early start:* Classes began in July, not March, giving 15+ months of preparation.
2. *Small groups:* Max 50 learners meant teachers could track each student.
3. *Subject specialists:* Not general tutors. You were taught by people who know the NSC exam structure.
Most learners only used the last 3 months of that cycle, which wasted the advantage.
*Q5: How will these changes affect employment and bursaries in Howick?*
*A:* Many jobs, SETA learnerships, and bursaries require Grade 12 with specific subjects and minimum APS scores. If you delay, you miss application cycles. Over 5 years, thatโs 2-3 bursary cycles lost. Employers also prefer candidates who complete on time. Delayed matric signals poor planning to recruiters, even if thatโs not fair.
*Q6: What if government policy changes again and blocks me from returning?*
*A:* Thatโs already happening in some cases. Learners whoโve been out of school for 3+ years are being told to re-enter at Grade 10. The safest move is to act while you still qualify for direct matric entry. Once that window closes, itโs much harder and more expensive to get back.
*Q7: Is 50 learners per year enough for Howick?*
*A:* Itโs not about โenough.โ Itโs about what we can teach well. A class of 50 with daily assessments and feedback produces better results than a class of 150 with monthly tests. If demand is higher, weโll refer learners to accredited partners, but our responsibility is to maintain quality for those we admit.
*Q8: Whatโs the real cost of waiting 1 year?*
*A:* Roughly: - 12 months of lost earning potential if you could have qualified for a job or learnership.
- Higher fees next year.
- New syllabus content to learn.
- Higher APS cut-offs for university.
For most learners, 1 year of delay costs more than the full yearโs tuition would have.
*Q9: Can I work and study if I start in July 2026?*
*A:* Yes. Thatโs why we run afternoon and evening classes for upgrade learners. But it only works if you start early. Trying to work full-time and cram 7 subjects in 4 months is why most people fail. Early start = manageable workload.
*Q10: What happens after the final May/June intake in 2027?*
*A:* That exam series ends permanently. From 2027 onwards, all learners write in October-November only. There will be no second chance in the same year. If you miss October, your next chance is October the following year.
*Q11: How do I know if Iโm ready to upgrade now?*
*A:* Come in for a free assessment and counseling session. Weโll check your previous results, identify gaps, and tell you honestly if you have enough time. If youโre not ready now, weโll give you a plan for the next intake. Honest feedback is better than false hope.
*Q12: Whatโs the single biggest mistake learners make?*
*A:* Waiting for โthe right time.โ The right time is before the deadline. The system doesnโt pause for personal circumstances, and the syllabus doesnโt pause for you. Learners who treat upgrading like a side project fail. Learners who treat it like a job pass.
*Q13: Where do I register for the final May/June 2027 intake?*
*A:* At Howick Academic Tutoring Centre office. Registration opens 25 May 2026 and closes 15 June 2026. Bring your ID, previous results, and a deposit to secure your place. Only 50 spacesโonce theyโre gone, theyโre gone.
*Bottom line:*
The Centre canโt create time for you. It can only give you the structure to use the time you have. Use it early, or explain later why you didnโt.

*OFFICIAL COMMUNITY STATEMENT*
*HOWICK ACADEMIC TUTORING CENTRE*
*14 May 2026*
*Subject: Program Restructuring, Examination Changes, and Final Grace Registration Period*
Dear Parents, Learners, and Members of the Howick Community,
After careful review of our academic direction, student outcomes, and national examination guidelines, Howick Academic Tutoring Centre is implementing a focused restructuring of our program from 2027 onwards. This decision is made to strengthen the quality of teaching, improve learner support, and align our center with sustainable academic delivery.
*1. Focused Subject Offering*
From 2027, the Centre will concentrate exclusively on science and mathematics-related subjects. The subjects offered will be:
- Mathematics
- Mathematical Literacy
- Physical Sciences
- Life Sciences
This shift allows us to allocate resources, specialist educators, and learning materials where we see the greatest impact and where learner demand is highest. All other subjects will be phased out of our program.
*2. Alignment with National Examination Changes*
We would like to take this opportunity to confirm that the May/June examination exams will be phased out. From 2027, all NSC examinations will be administered during the October-November period.
In line with this, Howick Academic Tutoring Centre will adopt a single annual intake. To maintain small class sizes and ensure each learner receives individual attention, *admission will be capped at 50 students per year*.
*3. Final Grace Registration Period โ Last May/June Intake 2027*
We have heard the concerns of parents and learners who were unable to register for this year and who would otherwise lose an examination opportunity. In response, the Centre will open a *final grace registration period* for the last May/June examination series in 2027.
*Key Details:*
- *Subjects Available for This Intake Only:* Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, History, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Business Studies
- *Registration Period:* 25 May 2026 to 15 June 2026
- *Classes Commence:* 1 July 2026
- *Examinations:* May 2027
- *Capacity:* Limited to *50 students*
This intake is strictly a one-time concession to assist affected learners. Once the 50 spaces are filled, registration will close, and no further May/June candidates will be accepted at the Centre.
*Our Commitment*
These changes are not made lightly. They are guided by our commitment to provide focused, high-quality instruction and to ensure that every learner admitted receives the support needed to succeed. We thank the community for your feedback, patience, and continued trust in Howick Academic Tutoring Centre.
For registration, subject enquiries, and further information, please visit the Centre or contact the office during working hours.
Yours in education,
