Getting to know the Montessori Number Rods. 🌱

The Montessori Number Rods help children understand numbers through touch, sight and hands-on exploration. Each rod represents a quantity from 1 to 10, with alternating red and blue sections that children can count to see how numbers increase in value.

But it’s about so much more than counting!

By working with these materials, children develop number recognition, counting skills, visual discrimination and a concrete understanding of quantity. They begin to see how numbers relate to one another, building a strong foundation for addition and other mathematical concepts.

Learning maths this way allows children to explore, discover and understand why numbers work, rather than simply memorising answers.

Why do we pour? 🌱

In Montessori, pouring is much more than simply moving something from one container to another. It is one of the ways children practise the skills they will use to become more independent in everyday life.

Through pouring, children learn to control their movements, coordinate their hands and eyes, concentrate on a task and carefully manage materials.

These small skills become the foundations for bigger things: pouring their own drink, serving themselves at mealtimes, helping in the kitchen and caring for their environment.

What looks simple today is helping prepare children for independence tomorrow. 🤍
