Not all nightlife happens on the ground! 🐸🌿

Meet one of the colourful characters that makes frogging in Zululand so much fun — the Natal Tree Frog.

While most people are tucked up in bed, there's an entirely different world coming to life in the bush.

This week our Bhejane students have been heading out after dark, learning to recognise frogs by their calls, identify species and discover just how fascinating these little creatures really are.

WHEN THE BLACK RHINO TRAIL YOU 🦏🌳 Part 1

We were sitting having lunch on trail when our second r***e noticed movement.

Three black rhino were approaching us.

They had heard our voices and were coming to investigate. Leading the way was a cow we know very well — No. 341.

She has quite a reputation in Zululand. Once she locks onto a position, shouting and waving your arms isn't going to help!

There was no time to find better cover. Six apprentice trails guides, two r***es and one rather small buffalo thorn between us and three curious black rhino. 😳

So we did the most important thing we could do:

Nothing.

Stay silent. Stay still. Don't give away our exact position.

Easier said than done with six wide-eyed apprentices looking at me for reassurance! 😂 My face said it all:

Don't move. Don't breathe. Just be still.

By remaining quiet and concealed, we left 341 uncertain of our exact position and avoided escalating the encounter.

This is why practical exposure under experienced mentorship is so important for apprentice trails guides.

I always tell them:

“It's not the black rhino you trail that's the problem — it's the ones that trail you.” 🦏

We walk in black rhino country. We can't pretend the danger doesn't exist. We need to understand these animals, respect them and know what to do when an encounter happens unexpectedly.

The more experience apprentices get under mentorship, the better prepared they'll be when the day comes that they're leading their own trails.

Celebrating ancient creatures on World Rhino Day. 🦏

Rhinos have walked the earth for around 50 million years. Today, all five surviving species face conservation challenges, making World Rhino Day a chance not only to celebrate these remarkable animals, but to understand them a little better.

At Bhejane, we believe conservation begins with knowledge. Learning to read behaviour, communication, tracks and signs allows us to see the bush differently.

So, what do you know about rhino?

01 | RHINOS HAVE THEIR OWN SOCIAL MEDIA
Dung middens are more than piles of dung. Through scent, rhinos can gather information about who has passed through an area.

02 | THEY DON’T SEE YOU AS WELL AS YOU THINK
Rhinos have relatively poor eyesight, but highly developed hearing and smell; reminding us that seeing is only one way an animal experiences its surroundings.

03 | RHINOS CAN “TALK” WITHOUT WORDS
Vocalisations, scent, posture and body language all form part of the rhino’s communication.

04 | WHITE RHINOS AREN’T WHITE
Despite their name, white rhinos are essentially grey. The name is generally linked to wyd, meaning “wide”, referring to their broad mouths.

05 | 15 MONTHS. ONE CALF.
A rhino pregnancy lasts around 15–18 months, and a white rhino calf may remain with its mother for around three years.

Every new calf represents years of investment in the next generation.

To understand wildlife is to look beyond what we see and to begin reading the stories written into the landscape.
