Youth Day 2026 - 50th commemoration
As Hillcrest High School celebrates 50 years of service to the Upper Highway community this year, so too do we take time to recognise the sacrifices made by the youth in Soweto and across South Africa in protesting the imposition of Afrikaans as the language of tuition - nationwide.

Dance company brings the meaning of Youth Day to life | Highway Mail Flatfoot Dance Company brought the historical 1976 Soweto Uprising to life at Hillcrest High School through a powerful dance performance.

👩🏽‍🏫👨🏾‍🏫👨🏼‍🏫𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 A group of six student teachers recently spent time at Hillcrest High School completing the practical component of their studies to become educators. Coming for a variety of different teacher training colleges across the country, they shadowed the educators at the school, assisting in the classroom and planning and presenting lessons, learning what it takes to teach and manage in the classroom environment. Thank you to our staff for supporting these future educators and helping them grow, and to the student teachers for their dedication while they were with us. 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 - 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. In an unprecedented victory, Hillcrest High School learners competing in the Edufleek DHS Model United Nations Conference, secured the unanimous vote of other contestants to adopt the joint resolution argument proposed by the team representing ‘China’, comprising of Leon Markwell, Luke Watson and Preston Pepper, and the team representing ‘South Africa’. The presiding judge at the MUN conference noted that this was the first time she had witnessed a unanimous decision taken to adopt a joint resolution.

In addition to this success, Leon Markwell was awarded Gold for Best Delegate, and Lubanzi Maluleka and Sinenhloso Shozi, representing team ‘Kenya’ were awarded Silver for Best Delegation. Hillcrest High School learners competed against 12 other delegations from schools from across the country in the debate centering around the complex, and timely, issue of “Digital Surveillance versus National Security.”

Educator-in-Charge of the HHS delegation, Mrs Tarryn Papé, said that the caucus evolved into a memorable event when delegates became increasingly intrigued by the proposal put forward by team ‘China’. “The draft resolution introduced a flagging system designed to detect and monitor cyber-terrorism and other cyber threats - an issue that affects more than 70% of countries worldwide,” Papé said. “What resulted was intensified discussions and team ‘South Africa’ joining forces with team ‘China’ to establish a joint resolution, demonstrating the essence of diplomacy: cooperation in pursuit of a common goal.”

💥🔥𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘁 - 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 🏐 Michaela Clegg, is a star to watch on the indoor and outdoor netball courts. In 2025 she was selected to represent the province as part of the KZN U17 Indoor Netball squad, also receiving a call up to try out for the U19 team. She made the tough call to put her commitment to the Hillcrest High School 1st team, a team she has played for since Grade 9, first and stepped down from the U17 team.

Michaela represented the U19A KZN Indoor Netball squad at the Interprovincial Netball Tournament, with her team placing 🏆2nd in the 6s tournament, and 3rd in the 7s tournament, receiving Silver and Bronze medals. She also tried out for the U19 South Africa Squad (which will be playing in the Netball World Cup later this year) making it through to the final round of trials – a fantastic achievement for a player for someone playing against much older players.

Following the U19 IPT, which took place in Gauteng, Michaela participated in an U19 Netball Festival at Waterkloof in Pretoria, playing for the Amanzimtoti Netball Club. She then headed to Benoni to play for the Hillcrest High School 1st Team in the St Dunstan’s Easter Sports Festival, before being called up to play for the Ladies B KZN Indoor Squad at the IPT at the end of April, winning 🥈Silver in the 6s tournament and 🏆Gold 🥇in the 7s tournament.

Michaela has also been selected to play for the U17 PADSSA Schools Outdoor Netball team and the U17 KZN Schools Outdoor Netball squads this year.

𝗔 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘀 - Evetech who surprised our team with the high-end gaming kit of their dreams. The team of Fortnite players will be going to Cape Town in July to compete in the live African Gaming Championship (AGC) finals. Learners from the team, which includes Tyler Muller, Caiden Smith, Wayne Kearley, Ashton Muller, Liam Elliott and Cian Els, has been fundraising by selling lucky draw tickets, shadow shift waitering at the Hillcrest and Watercrest Spur restaurants and appealing to the public to assist them with their costs.

Hillcrest High School IT Integrator, Mr Nicholas Naude, who is also a Past Pupil, has been working with the team to boost their skills during their Esports gaming sessions. He will accompany the team to Cape Town. We look forward to our team making great strides in the competition!

Our Hillcrest High School Sign Language Club, along with Educator-in-Charge, Mrs Jo Silva, visited Hillcrest Primary School in March this year to spend time teaching the Grade 5 LEAP Class learners some basic sign. Our Club members enjoyed introducing the alphabet, teaching learners how to sign their own names, and showing them how to sign along to songs! What a great way to give back, as well as create awareness of the language, which is one of our official languages in South Africa. 💫

𝗣𝗦𝗚 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 - 𝗥𝘂𝗴𝗯𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸.
On the Rugby fields at Pionier High School in Vryheid our U14, U15, 1st and 2nd teams were tested to extremes, losing their matches but can be proud of the game they played, refusing to give up despite tough opposition.

Congratulations to our U16s, who had been undefeated in the series so far, and who played hard against Vryheid, losing by a small margin and bringing home the Silver trophy, placing 2nd in the tournament!
