The Hermanus High School Matric Class of 2026 celebrated their 40 Days milestone with a hearty breakfast at Bossa Hermanus this morning. Learners were treated to juice, coffee, tea and, of course, a delicious fry-up to kick-start the day.

Wat dit nog meer pret gemaak het, is dat almal aangetrek het volgens die eerste letter van hul naam – wat gesorg het vir hope kreatiwiteit en kleurvolle karakters!

Ná ontbyt het die Klas van 2026 by die amfiteater bo die Astro bymekaargekom vir ’n pragtige groepsfoto, voordat hulle na die skool teruggekeer en weer in die klas gaan sit het.

CULTURE | KULTUUR

The annual Hermanus High School Oratory Competition took place on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, in the school hall, giving Grade 10 to 12 learners the opportunity to engage with important issues and showcase their public speaking talents. All Grade 10–12 learners were invited to attend the event and support the contestants.

This year's competition featured an impressive panel of adjudicators: Executive Mayor of the Overstrand, Archie Klaas, local attorney Adrian Louw, and associate attorney Justin Inch. The occasion was particularly meaningful for Inch, who won the very same Hermanus High School Oratory Competition when he was a learner at the school in 2015.

Eight contestants took to the stage: Matteo Lanuti, Nikolas Soekoe, Lwandle Thekwane, Aiden Smith, Klara Schoonraad, Jamila Kombe, Chloë Hechter, and Talia van Zyl. Their speeches covered a wide range of thought-provoking topics, from the importance of music and strength training to the impact of screen time and the importance of democracy.

After a challenging afternoon of adjudication, the winners were announced:

1st Place: Lwandle Thekwane
2nd Place: Matteo Lanuti
3rd Place: Nikolas Soekoe

The judges commended the contestants for their courage, preparation and willingness to stand up and make their voices heard. Reflecting on the standard of the competition, one of the adjudicators remarked:

“The ability to communicate an idea clearly and confidently is one of the most powerful skills a young person can develop. Today, these learners proved that they not only have voices, but that they have something worth saying.”

The annual competition once again highlighted the talent, confidence and critical thinking of Hermanus High School's learners. It also served as a reminder that opportunities such as these allow young people to develop the confidence to speak, challenge ideas and contribute meaningfully to the world around them.

Congratulations to all the contestants and especially to Lwandle Thekwane, Matteo Lanuti and Nikolas Soekoe on their outstanding achievements.
