Universities and 2026 X2Y career guidance Programme, opens doors to future opportunities
On Friday 28 August 2026, the University of the Free State, together with 11 other universities and colleges, hosted the 2026 X2Y Career Guidance Programme initiative at New Horizon College, Harrismith. It is not just a career expo, but also a gateway to opportunity, information, and inspiration for learners who are preparing to make important decisions about their futures. By bringing universities, colleges, training institutions, employers, and career advisers together in one place, the expo gives young people direct access to guidance that can shape their study choices and career paths.
For many learners, choosing what to study after school can feel overwhelming. There are many options available, including university degrees, TVET college programmes, learnerships, apprenticeships, bursaries, and workplace training opportunities. A career expo helps to reduce this uncertainty by allowing learners to speak directly to representatives from different institutions and industries. They can ask questions about admission requirements, application dates, subject choices, funding options, accommodation, and career prospects.
The exhibitors helped learners to understand the connection between education and the world of work. They explained which skills are needed in different careers, what daily work in those fields looks like, and how learners can prepare themselves while still at school. This practical advice encourages learners to take their studies seriously, choose relevant subjects, develop communication and problem-solving skills, and start planning early.
We believe that our Grade 11 learners benefited from this expo. It is vital for learners in preparing for life after school. It brings valuable information closer to learners, gives them the confidence to ask questions, and helps them see the many possibilities available to them. When learners leave the expo with clearer goals and practical knowledge, the event has achieved its purpose: opening doors to a brighter and more prepared future.
We want to thank all the exhibitors for investing time and guidance to our learners
