A FINAL CHECK BEFORE THE SPRING HARVEST

Today I completed the quality check on the lettuce and spinach, and I’m happy with what I found.

The lettuce has developed beautifully. Many of the heads are already large, firm and dense, while others still need a little more time. The spinach has also improved significantly and is showing much stronger growth, although most of it still needs a little more time to reach the size I’m comfortable putting on the market.

So, we’re giving the crops one final week of growth before we begin harvesting and releasing the produce.

Interestingly, on my way home today, I noticed something that put the whole season into perspective.

The grass that was burned during winter is now producing fresh, green shoots. The grass that didn’t burn is still largely grey and unchanged.

It reminded me that sometimes what looks like destruction is actually part of renewal.

Winter has been hard on the farm. Growth slowed, some things struggled, and patience was required. But now the evidence is everywhere — in the grass, in the vegetables, and in the landscape around us.

Winter is over. Growth has returned. 🌱

And perhaps that is one of agriculture’s greatest lessons:

Not every difficult season is meant to destroy you. Some seasons prepare you for a stronger one.

One more week.

Then we harvest. 🌱🥬

Thank you to everyone who engaged with our recent produce posts and showed interest in buying from Zondo AgriScience. We truly appreciate the support! 🙏🏾

However, the director is currently away on an academic trip, so we are not quite ready to take orders yet. Although the produce looks great, protocol dictates thta it is inspected and quality-checke first before it leaves the farm.

On Sunday we will collect agronomic data by assessing the produce, quantities, maturity and overall quality. Only then will we open orders.

On 5 September, Zondo AgriScience joins Mabjo foundation for the Phola Park Mixed Farming Development & Market Launch in Intabazwe, Harrismith.

We will be there to showcase science-based agriculture and hydroponic production, connect with fellow farmers and engage directly with the agricultural community.

As an Agricultural Scientist, Ngoye Zondo will also be available to farmers and aspiring producers who want to discuss crop health, plant diseases, pests, soil health, plant physiology, production challenges and practical agronomic solutions.

Today was nutrient mixing day at Zondo AgriScience. We carefully measured our nutrient solution and adjusted the pH to the correct range before feeding the plants. Getting the pH right allows the roots to absorb the nutrients they need, while the correct nutrient concentration ensures strong growth, healthy leaves, and high-quality harvests.

Hydroponics is not just about adding water—it's about understanding plant science and giving crops exactly what they need.

Not so rare a sight of the Director running a quick systems check.

From a third of his scholarship fund, he initiated this project because of his passion for agriculture and belief that it is a sure path to self and national emancipation from poverty and food insecurity.

What started as a small experimental NFT system is now evolving into Zondo Agriscience, a platform for innovation, production, and youth development.

This is where science meets the soil-less future.
This is where systems are built, not just studied.
And this is where the next generation will learn how to grow food, build businesses, and take control of their future.
