In South African English, the titles Mr, Mrs, Ms, and Dr are not followed by full stops at the end.
Only titles such as Adv. and Prof. end with a full stop.
Rule:
If the word and the abbreviation end with the same letter, you DO NOT put a full stop.
Examples:
Mister - Mr
Doctor - Dr
Miss - Ms
If the word and the abbreviation do not end with the same letter, you DO put a full stop.
Examples:
Professor - Prof.
Advocate - Adv.
