Investec Promaths Social Challenge 2025

The following article was written by Thabo Makgalatiba, Grade 12 learner highlighting the team's participation and achievement in the Investec Promaths Social Challenge.

The Investec Promaths Social Challenge is a team-based innovation competition designed for high school learners participating in Investec's Promaths programme in South Africa.

While the core Promaths programme focuses heavily on mastering Mathematics and Science, the Social Challenge is designed to build critical leadership and interpersonal skills by positioning young people as active agents of social change.

Key Pillars of the Challenge

The competition requires teams of learners to identify real-world problems within their communities and propose actionable, sustainable solutions. The projects must address one of three main focus areas:

Improving school resources
Peer tutoring
Digital access
🌱 Environmental Conservation
Waste management
Recycling initiatives
Water conservation
💼 Youth Unemployment
Entrepreneurship ideas
Skills development initiatives

How it Works

Mentorship Throughout the challenge, we did not work alone. We were supported and guided by Promaths alumni, our school principal, as well as Investec staff members who act as corporate mentors and advisors.

Skill Development Beyond the competition itself, the challenge is designed to teach vital professional skills that aren't usually covered in a traditional maths curriculum, such as public speaking, persuasion, teamwork, financial planning, and critical problem-solving.

The Prizes

The competition is highly competitive, with more than 350 teams taking part.

🥉 3rd Place – R100,000

We won 3rd position and brought R100 000 to the centre at Makgatse Secondary School.

RE: TEMPORARY SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO NATIONAL MARCHES

Please be advised that Phl Moraka Secondary School will be CLOSED on Tuesday, 30 June 2026.

This decision has been taken due to reported national marches planned to take place across South Africa on that day.

The safety and well-being of all learners and staff remain our top priority. We therefore request that all learners remain at home on this day to avoid any negative eventualities that may affect them adversely.

1. No teaching and learning will take place on campus.
2. School transport will not operate.
3. All extra-mural activities are cancelled for the day.
4. The school will reopen as normal on Wednesday, 01 July 2026, unless otherwise communicated.

We urge parents to monitor official news channels and to keep learners indoors and safe. Academic work to be covered will be communicated by subject teachers.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
