HOW DID THE LIVING COMMUNICATE WITH THE ANCESTORS?

They could no longer see their ancestors.
They could no longer touch them.
So how did they believe they could still reach them?

This question takes us deep into African spiritual traditions.

Africa has never had one single culture or one single answer. Yoruba, Igbo, Akan, Kongo and many other peoples developed their own ways of understanding the relationship between the living, the departed, the spiritual world and the Creator.

For many communities, death did not mean that every connection simply disappeared.

The living remembered the names of those who came before them. They told their stories. They passed their wisdom to children. They gathered as families and performed traditions that expressed respect and remembrance.

In some traditions, prayer was part of this relationship.

In others, people used libation—pouring water or another drink onto the earth while speaking words of respect, remembrance, gratitude or prayer.

But why pour something onto the ground?

Because the earth was not always seen as meaningless dirt.

It could be part of a sacred relationship between human beings, nature and the unseen world.

Imagine an elder standing quietly, holding a vessel in his hands.

He pours.

The liquid touches the earth.

And words are spoken for those who came before.

To an outsider, it may look like nothing is happening.

But to the people who understood the tradition, the action carried meaning.

Some traditions also gave importance to dreams, sacred places and ceremonies. But these beliefs were not identical across Africa, and we should never pretend that every African people understood them in exactly the same way.

The deeper idea was connection.

The living had not forgotten the dead.

The names of the departed could continue living through the family.

Their lessons could continue shaping generations.

And for some traditions, their spiritual relationship with the living could continue beyond physical death.

But now comes the question that makes this even more powerful:

When our ancestors poured libation and spoke those words… WHO were they speaking to?

Were they speaking to the ancestors?

Were they honouring the Creator?

Or was there a deeper understanding behind the ritual?

WHO BECOMES AN ANCESTOR
African Cosmology Series

When a person d1es, the body returns to the earth — but the spirit begins its journey home.

Not every person who d1es becomes an ancestor.

In African traditional belief, de@th is not the end.
It is a crossing.
But not every spirit crosses into the place of honour.

Only those who lived well are remembered as true ancestors.

✍🏿What makes a person an ancestor?

Across many African traditions, the teaching is similar:

A true ancestor is someone who lived with truth, protected life, cared for family, and left wisdom behind.

The Yoruba say a good name is better than riches.
Those who lived with honour are remembered with honour.

The Akan say when a person d1es, their deeds speak.
What you did in life decides how you are remembered.

The Zulu say the ancestors are those who lived well.
A clean life opens the way to ancestral respect.

The Igbo say those who lived with truth continue as living spirits among their people.

So it is not only about dyi.ng.
It is about how you lived.

That is why not every de@d person is called an ancestor.
Only those with good character and good energy are given that honour.

🧘🏿The role of the living

The living also matter.

Through remembrance, calling names, and libation, the family keeps the connection alive.

When the living remember with respect, the ancestor remains close.
When the living forget, the memory becomes weak.

This is why many African families pour drink, call the names of those who have passed, and give thanks.

We do not worship the ancestors.
We remember them with honour.

They are the foundation.
We are the continuation.

In some traditions, proper burial and funeral rites are also very important.
Without them, the spirit may not rest well.

To become an ancestor is not about age.
It is not about wealth.
It is not about status.

It is about the life you lived.
It is about the truth you carried.
It is about the example you left behind.

When a person’s life becomes a lesson, their spirit becomes a guide.

THE SOUL REMEMBERS WHAT THE MIND FORGETS

Our souls are ancient.

Long before we carried our present names, lived in our present homes, or walked beneath this particular sky, African wisdom understood life as a journey of continuity not simply a beginning and an ending.

The ancestors taught that existence moves through seasons, generations, dreams, death, birth, and transformation. The physical body changes, but the mystery of the soul runs deeper.

Sometimes, what feels like a struggle is not merely an obstacle. It may be a lesson.

A broken relationship may teach discernment.
A season of loss may teach detachment.
A closed door may redirect your path.
A recurring pattern may be asking to be understood not repeated.

This is why the African spiritual question is not always:

“Why is this happening to me?”
Sometimes it is:
“What is life teaching me through this?”

Ask yourself:
What have I come here to learn?
What ancestral patterns am I meant to understand?
What sacred lesson is hidden inside this season?
What must I release so that I can walk differently?

Do not rush through every difficult season.
Some seasons are not punishments.
They are initiations.
The soul does not merely pass through life.

🔥 SIGNS YOU MAY CARRY A FIRE-SPIRIT CALLING

Across African traditions, fire was never merely something that burns. It could represent transformation, purification, courage, protection, ancestral remembrance and the power to end what no longer serves life.

Some traditions associate a strong fire connection with:

🔥 RECURRING FIRE SYMBOLISM
fire appearing repeatedly in dreams, ceremonies or deep reflection, interpreted according to cultural context.

🔥 INTENSE COURAGE
confronting injustice, protecting others and speaking when silence becomes harmful.

🔥 TRANSFORMATION
moving through powerful cycles of endings, rebuilding and renewal.

🔥 ATTRACTION TO SACRED FIRE
finding focus, peace or reflection around a ceremonial flame or hearth.

🔥 A STRONG PRESENCE
determination, leadership, resilience and an unwillingness to be easily controlled.

🔥 PROTECTION & CLEANSING
fire symbolism connected with purification, transition, restoration and ancestral remembrance.

But there is another layer:

🔥 FIRE CAN BECOME A FOCUS FOR SPIRITUAL WORK.

Where tradition permits, a safe, supervised sacred space may use a controlled flame, candle, drum, rattle or other ancestral instrument as a focus for reflection. Sit quietly. Honour your lineage. Give thanks. Reflect on what must be released and what must be strengthened.

Fire can warm. Fire can transform. Fire can destroy.

That is why African wisdom demands character before power.

FIRE IS POWERFUL—AND POWER WITHOUT CHARACTER BECOMES DESTRUCTION.

A genuine spiritual path is measured not by dramatic experiences, but by discipline, humility, responsibility, wisdom and service to life.

REALMS OF CREATION — EPISODE 4
THE PHYSICAL REALM

Before humans learned to feel…
before ancestors learned to guide…
before spirits shaped destiny…
there was earth.

Not empty land.
Not silent mountains.
Not still rivers.

A living body.
A breathing force.
A realm with its own heartbeat.

This is the Physical Realm.

Across Africa, this living earth has many names:

The Yoruba call it Ilẹ̀ Ayé — the sacred earth of existence.

The Igbo call it Ala — the living land, mother of all things.

The Akan call it Asase Yaa — the Earth Mother who holds every step we take.

The Zulu call it Umhlaba — the ground that remembers every footprint.

The Kongo call it Ntoto — the soil that carries spirit.

Different languages. Different peoples.
But one deep truth remains:

💪🏿The Physical Realm is alive.

Every mountain holds presence.
Every river carries memory.
Every forest breathes.
Every desert tests the soul.
Every animal moves with purpose.
Every stone has seen more than we ever will.

This is not just nature.
This is the body of creation.

But here is an important difference between animals and humans.

Animals belong fully to the Physical Realm.
They live by three strong guides:

1) instinct — the natural knowledge they are born with.
A bird does not go to school to learn how to build a nest.
A newborn antelope stands and runs without being taught.
This inner knowing comes with their nature.

2) the law of the land — the natural order of the earth.
Animals live according to how the Physical Realm works.
The strong hunt. The weak hide or run.
Every creature has its place.
They do not live by human ideas of right and wrong.
They follow the order that the earth itself has set.

3) the seasons — the changing rhythm of the year.

Animals move when the rains come.
They give birth at the right time.
Some sleep through the dry season.
Their whole life follows the beat of the earth — rainy season, dry season, and everything in between.

This is why animals are complete in the Physical Realm.
They do not carry destiny the way humans do.
They do not choose a path the way humans choose.
They simply live as the earth designed them to live.

Humans also walk in this same Physical Realm.
We eat from the same soil.
We drink from the same rivers.
We feel the same sun and the same rain.

But humans are not only of this realm.
We carry something more.
We carry destiny.
We carry the memory of the ancestors.
We carry the power to choose — to create, to destroy, to love, to forgive, and to rise again after falling.

That is the difference.
Animals remain fully inside the Physical Realm.
Humans stand in two places at once —
the outer world of earth,
and the inner world of spirit, memory, and choice.

In this realm, rivers cleanse.
Forests protect.
Oceans hold the echoes of those who came before.
Animals sometimes carry messages.
The land itself can shape how we feel and how we move.

The Physical Realm is the stage where human life unfolds.
It is the ground where destiny becomes action.
It is the place where spirit becomes visible.

Here, humans walk with dust on their feet
and light in their chest.
Here, the ancestors watch from above
and the earth spirits move below.

This is the realm of soil, sky, water, and fire.
The soil that grows us.
The sky that covers us.
The water that reflects us.
The fire that shapes us.

This is where creation becomes real.
