Former education minister Naledi Pandor has spoken out about Mathematical Literacy in South African schools, calling its introduction during her time in office a major mistake that she regrets. She explained that she never fully backed the subject because she feared it would pull students away from pure mathematics, and that is exactly what happened. Many learners switched to the easier option, which brought down the overall numbers taking the more rigorous course. Experts like Dr Mamokgethi Phakeng and Professor Sonja van Putten back the idea of phasing it out, pointing out that even a top mark in Maths Lit gives students almost no advantage for university entry into fields like engineering, medicine or commerce, and that schools sometimes push the subject simply to boost their pass rates.

Some education specialists argue that getting rid of Mathematical Literacy would leave many learners with no maths education at all after Grade 9, especially those from schools that struggle with teaching pure maths. They say the real problem sits in the early grades where foundations are weak, and that Maths Lit still gives practical skills for everyday life while helping more students pass matric. The debate continues over whether keeping the subject opens doors for some or quietly closes them for others who might have managed pure maths with better support.

Today, Dennilton Educational Movement honours the strength, courage and resilience of women who have carried the struggle for freedom, justice, equality and education.

We remember and draw inspiration from Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Mariam Makeba, and the countless women who stood firm and paved the way for generations to come. โœŠ๐Ÿพ

To the women of today: you are not only beneficiaries of their legacy, you are the carriers of the struggle. Through education, leadership, courage and service, you continue to shape a better South Africa.

โš–๏ธ LEGAL 67 CAMPAIGN | A SUCCESSFUL
INITIATIVE ๐Ÿ“š

Yesterday, Dennilton Educational Movement (DEM), in partnership with Matlwa KJ Attorneys and Advocate PP Thabede, successfully hosted the Legal 67 Campaign, reaching Grade 10โ€“12 learners with valuable career guidance and legal education.

The campaign provided learners with an opportunity to explore the legal profession, understand the journey to becoming a legal practitioner, and appreciate the role of the law in building a just and democratic society. We trust that the knowledge shared has inspired many young people to pursue careers in law and to become future leaders committed to justice and service.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our partners, the participating schools, principals, educators, and every learner who actively participated. Your enthusiasm and engagement made the campaign a remarkable success.

At Dennilton Educational Movement, we remain committed to creating opportunities that empower young people through education, mentorship, and career development.

Together, we continue to inspire, educate, and shape the leaders of tomorrow.

๐Ÿ“šโš–๏ธ EMPOWERING THE NEXT GENERATION OF LEGAL PROFESSIONALS โš–๏ธ๐Ÿ“š

This Mandela Month, Dennilton Educational Movement (DEM) is proud to partner with Matlwa KJ Attorneys and Advocate PP Thabede to inspire Grade 10โ€“12 learners through our Legal 67 Campaign.

For 67 meaningful minutes, learners will gain valuable insight into the legal profession, career pathways, the role of the law in society, and what it takes to become a successful legal practitioner.

Education has the power to transform lives, and by investing just 67 minutes, we can help shape future lawyers, advocates, and leaders who will champion justice and constitutional values in South Africa.
