HEAD OFFICE VISIT
Today the school was fortunate enough to be visited by the team from Head Office to assess, evaluate and give support to curriculum delivery. The team was made up of different Directorates, teacher development, SNEs, both TLS GET and FET.
The session started with the principal of the school making his presentation on the following aspects :
1) school profile
2) school statistics
3) tracking learner performance
4) curriculum coverage
5) support for progressed and repeat learners
6) support programs for maths and science
7) inclusivity matters
8) administrative and management matters
9) best practices
10) challenges
11) support required
Then teachers of different targeted subjects were called with their files and the learners work (exercise books and portfolio file). The following subjects were involved :
1) Mathematica grade 10 - 12
2) Technical Mathematica grade 10 - 12
3) Mathematical Literacy grade 10 - 12
4) IsiZulu HL grade 8 - 12
5) English FAL grade 8 - 12
6) Natural Sciences
SMT was updated on the teacher development programs that were available for the teachers. IQMS, Siyavula Practice Online for both Mathematica and Physical Sciences teachers and on Professional Learning Communities.
FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
SNEs also made themselves available to assist the school on establishment and functionality of SBST. The issues of concessions were also recommended to be dealt with in workshop to be organized by the District.
The school was praised on being able to attend and assist on social skills as there was evidence of involvement of DSD, HA and Doh in school as they had programs already implemented.
On curriculum coverage
- most subjects were said to be doing well under circumstances as we faced with rotational attendance of learners
- issue of notional was emphasized as it was a policy matter even during the COVID-19. The school has to look at how it can increase to hour period assisted by the Circuit.
- workload for language teachers was identified to be too much to allow good attendance of work that need to be done
- English Across Curriculum there should have evidence in all subjects
- shortages of language textbooks so as to promote reading and assist learners when doing homework
- learners to have a proper plan on how to work at home
- evidence of activities to learners and feedback were available in all subjects and of good quality and quantity
- implementation of SIP and Hand over tools were expected to be dated and reviewed in all terms
- to utilize exam guidelines so as to assist with improving quality of tasks given to learners
Overall the school was said to be doing well and to attend to recommendations that have been presented
As a school we appreciate the support visit and we hope some of our challenges will be attended and assist the school to improve.
