How do you teach a multilingual student body in a university that still works mostly in English? Through September, academics from across Rhodes have been meeting to work on exactly that. Ulwimi noLwazi: Multilingual Pedagogies for a Pluriversal University is a four-part workshop series bringing colleagues from the humanities, sciences, commerce and education together with guests from the University of Limpopo, UCT and Rhodes to look at language policy, terminology development and multilingual assessment. One session had participants coining isiXhosa terms for cell division concepts from scratch. Another traced how the isiXhosa word for "temptation" took a century of revision to settle.

As Dr Wanga Gambushe put it: "We do our bit, and we pass the baton on to the next generation."

🕊 As Registrar, Professor Moodly saw her role as one of stewardship, ensuring that the University’s governance, policies and academic affairs worked together in service of the institution and its community.

Her tenure was also marked by significant institutional changes that she helped pioneer. These included her contribution to the revision of the University Statute. She’ll be remembered for her involvement in enabling members of the senior executive to retain their professorial titles and driving changes to the way supplementary examinations for students were conducted. These were important changes to the University’s governance and academic systems, reflecting her commitment to ensuring that institutional frameworks remained responsive to the needs of a changing University.

Professor Moodly leaves a lasting mark on Rhodes University: as a leader, scholar, alumna and advocate for transformation and women’s leadership. The University extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, students and the many Old Rhodians whose lives she touched.

May her memory continue to inspire the courage, competence and leadership she so strongly believed in.
