Rhodes University extends its warmest congratulations to two of its alumni, Anele Siswana and Thabo Wisdom Martin Limema, following their official appointment by President Cyril Ramaphosa to the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (NCGBVF).

President Ramaphosa announced the appointments of the Council members for a three-year tenure from 1 August 2026 to 31 July 2029. The appointments were made in terms of section 6(1)(a) read with sections 6(2) and (3), as well as section 9(1)(a) of the National Council on Gender-Based Violence Act, 2024 (Act No. 9 of 2024). The National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide serves as a vital statutory body mandated to provide strategic leadership to eliminate gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa. In its statutory role, the Council coordinates a multisectoral and intersectoral approach to implement the national strategy against GBVF at the national, provincial, local, and community levels.

As the Council assumes its term at the start of Women’s Month, President Ramaphosa expects that the Council will leverage the classification of gender-based violence and femicide as a national disaster to challenge harmful attitudes and practices, advance women’s economic empowerment, strengthen law enforcement, and scale up survivor-centred support. The Rhodes University community takes immense pride in seeing its graduates step into high-impact national leadership roles that uphold the institution's values of human dignity, social justice, and public service.

Anele Siswana began his journey at Rhodes University in 2013 and completed his Master of Arts in 2016. He brings extensive expertise to the Council and was previously honoured as a 2023 Rhodes University Distinguished Alumnus for his exceptional contributions to mental health and social advocacy. Thabo Wisdom Martin Limema enrolled at Rhodes University in 2005 and completed his Bachelor of Accountancy in 2009. His strong background in accountancy and strategic oversight will offer crucial financial, governance, and management leadership to support the Council's national mandate.

These appointments reflect the core spirit of Rhodes University as an institution, "Where Leaders Learn," preparing graduates to tackle South Africa's most urgent challenges with courage and integrity. Rhodes University warmly congratulates both appointees and reaffirms its ongoing support for national initiatives to eradicate GBVF.
