🌍 What Lies Beneath Our Feet? The Anatomy of Earth 🌎
Earth may look like a solid world from the surface, but deep beneath our feet, it is divided into several distinct layers—each with different temperatures, materials and properties. 🔥
🌫️ Atmosphere — 0–100 km
The gaseous layer surrounding Earth, where weather occurs and where we live.
🪨 Crust — ~5–70 km
Earth’s thin, solid outer layer. Oceanic crust is generally thinner, while continental crust can be much thicker.
🔥 Upper Mantle — beneath the crust to ~410 km
Made mostly of hot, solid rock that can slowly flow over geological timescales.
🌋 Transition Zone — 410–660 km
A region where minerals in the mantle undergo changes caused by increasing pressure and temperature.
🪨 Lower Mantle — 660–2,890 km
The largest layer of Earth’s interior, composed of extremely hot, high-pressure rock.
🔥 Outer Core — 2,890–5,150 km
A layer of liquid iron and nickel. Its movement generates most of Earth’s magnetic field.
🌕 Inner Core — 5,150–6,371 km
A solid sphere made mainly of iron and nickel, kept solid by the enormous pressure despite temperatures comparable to the surface of the Sun.
📍 Earth’s center is about 6,371 km beneath the surface.
And here's the amazing part: humans have never drilled anywhere close to Earth's mantle, let alone its core. We learn about these hidden layers mainly through seismic waves produced by earthquakes and other geophysical measurements. 🌎🔬
🌌 Everything we know about Earth’s deepest interior comes from reading the signals traveling through a planet we can barely scratch.
