The Gauteng Department of Education has announced the dismissal of a male SGB-appointed educator from Sunward Park High School in Boksburg, effective today, subsequent to a student protest this morning.

The dismissal follows serious allegations that the educator sexually assaulted and verbally abused female learners at the school.

It is understood that these incidents have allegedly taken place on school grounds and outside the premises since 2024, with the most recent incident having allegedly taken place in August 2025.

According to the department, the educator was suspended on 28 August 2025, following a complaint lodged by parents at the school on 27 August 2025, and subsequently he was dismissed in absentia at a disciplinary hearing today.

The educator’s charges included three counts of sexual assault and one count of verbal misconduct, which all detail a disgraceful, improper and unbecoming behaviour not expected of an educator directed at female learners at the school.

The school acted swiftly to suspend the educator as a precautionary measure to safeguard the wellbeing of learners and to uphold the integrity of the school environment and later dismissed him.

The educator was found guilty of contravening the Code of Professional Ethics, hence his dismissal.

GDE says this decision will be communicated to the South African Council for Educators (SACE) with a formal recommendation that the educator’s name be permanently removed from the SACE register. This step would revoke the said educator’s teaching accreditation, preventing employment at any school or educational institution in South Africa in the future.

“The GDE strongly condemns any form of violence, abuse, or misconduct by educators. Teachers are entrusted with the safety, care, and development of learners, and any breach of that trust is treated with the utmost seriousness. Schools must be safe and supportive spaces where learners can thrive academically and personally without fear of harm,” said Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane.

“The Department will provide counselling and other support services to the affected learners. Furthermore, the GDE urges learners, parents, and members of the public to never cease in reporting any misconduct by educators to school management, district offices, or through the Department’s dedicated hotline and WhatsApp lines to ensure that such matters are addressed swiftly and appropriately,” said MEC Chiloane.

Good afternoon parents

All parents/guardians of learners at Reiger Park Secondary School are reminded, as per the letter issued to all learners when they received their report cards last year, that the school will start for all learners (Grades 8 to 12) on Tuesday, 14 January 2025. The school will start at 8h00.

The reason for bringing the learners earlier to school than the official starting date of 15 January 2025, is to allocate classes to them, issue their class time tables to them, workshop the code of conduct with them etc. We intend to have a smooth start to the academic year on the official starting date of 15 January 2025.

We trust that all the parents/guardians with learners at Reiger Park Secondary will cooperate with us with regard to the above.
