Night Rating training involves a lot more than learning how to fly after sunset. At HAFT, student pilots develop night VFR risk management through pre-flight lighting checks, route planning, safe altitude selection, night navigation, cockpit lighting discipline and emergency readiness when terrain, weather and visual references are harder to assess.

On 16 August, HAFT recognises World Helicopter Day and the people who keep rotary-wing aviation moving: instructors, engineers, crews, pilots and the student pilots building their hours one flight at a time. From the first hover to advanced operational training, helicopter flying demands coordination, discipline, situational awareness and respect for the machine.

โ€œHovering for the first time teaches you very quickly that every control input matters. Nothing is separate in a helicopter. Hands, feet, eyes and judgement all have to work together.โ€

Our Bell 206 LongRanger is most relevant in our post-basic and advanced training phases, rather than initial ab-initio PPL(H) training. It provides a progression platform once core helicopter handling skills have been established.

๐Ÿš Training applications may include advanced handling and turbine familiarisation, where students develop confidence on a larger single-engine Bell turbine helicopter within HAFTโ€™s training fleet.

๐Ÿš The LongRanger also supports CPL(H), hour-building and operational preparation, helping students transition from foundational aircraft handling into more professional, mission-focused flying. HAFTโ€™s fleet supports training from PPL(H) through to ATPL(H).

๐Ÿš From a technical perspective, turbine exposure develops understanding of power management, torque awareness, rotor RPM control, aircraft performance and operational limitations on a larger Bell platform.

For initial PPL(H) training, HAFT identifies the Robinson R44 as the primary training aircraft, positioning the Bell 206 LongRanger as a valuable progression aircraft for advanced handling and operational development.

PIC (Pilot in Command) responsibility covers the safe, legal and compliant conduct of flight, including pre-flight planning, aircraft airworthiness, fuel, weather, performance, passenger safety, regulatory compliance, in-flight decision-making, emergency authority and post-flight reporting. It defines the pilotโ€™s operational accountability before, during and after every helicopter flight.

Meteorology forms a core part of helicopter pilot training, equipping pilots to assess atmospheric conditions, interpret weather data and make operational decisions that directly affect flight safety and performance.

Read on as we explore the key meteorological principles every helicopter pilot must understand and how weather knowledge supports safe flight operations.

Why Meteorology Is a Critical Part of Helicopter Pilot Training | Henley Air Flight Training One of the most important subjects studied during pilot training is meteorology; the science of weather and atmospheric conditions. For helicopter pilots, understanding weather is critical because changing conditions can directly affect visibility, aircraft performance and operational safety. Meteor...
