Architecture rooted in place and possibility

Architect, researcher and academic Dr Sechaba Maape will deliver the 2026 Milde McWilliams Memorial Lecture at Nelson Mandela University's Summerstrand South Campus on 3 September.

Hosted by the School of Architecture and supported by the Milde McWilliams Trust, the annual lecture is one of the most significant events on the School's calendar.

Since its inception in 2007, it has provided a platform for the exchange of architectural thought at the highest level.

The lecture honours the legacy of Albert Milde and architect Herbert McWilliams, whose influence helped shape the architectural heritage of Gqeberha.

This year's lecture, titled "Semiotic Architecture: Learning from Caves and Whirlwinds", will be presented by Dr Maape, a senior lecturer at the Wits School of Architecture and Planning, director of the design practice Afreetekture, and editor of Architectures’ SA.

School of Architecture Director Andrew Palframan says the Milde McWilliams Memorial Lecture continues to play a vital role in exposing students and the profession to diverse perspectives that challenge and enrich contemporary architectural thinking.

"The Milde McWilliams Memorial Lecture provides a unique opportunity for students, academics, professionals and the public to engage with leading voices whose work is shaping conversations about the future of the built environment.”

Forestry student Sandisiwe Langman wins national postgraduate student award

Reasons to be Proud - BSc Honours student in Natural Resource Management (Forestry) student at Mandela University’s George Campus Sandisiwe Langman recently received the She Is Forestry SA Postgraduate Award.

Ms Langman graduated cm laude with her Advanced Diploma in Forestry in 2025 and was nominated by the University’s Department of Forestry and Wood Technology for the award.

Her current research focuses on improving the productivity of clonal Eucalyptus hybrids, specifically Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla.

This award recognises her achievements and contribution within the forestry field. According to Forestry South Africa, the competition attracted a high calibre of students, making the judging process particularly challenging.

This recognition also highlights the calibre of postgraduate students emerging from the University’s forestry programme.

“This is another proud moment for our Faculty and Department,” said Tiaan Pool, congratulating Ms Langman on receiving the award.

The award was recently presented during a She Is Forestry SA webinar, where Ms Langman was invited to deliver a one-minute acceptance speech. Award recipients were also required to participate actively in the webinar as part of the recognition.

Women’s Month with the Centre for Women and Gender Studies

This month, Mandela University's Centre for Women and Gender Studies (CWGS) commemorates 70 years of the 1956 Women’s March with a programme of activities that look to the past, present and future.

These activities offer feminist visions, alternatives and perspectives across gender-based violence, mass resistance and economic justice.

Feminist Focus on Violence with Dr Zimbini Ogle

On 30 July, the CWGS and SARChI Chair in African Feminist Imagination hosted the second event in the Feminist Focus on Violence series.

The launch of clinical psychologist and researcher Dr Zimbini Ogle’s book Under Siege: Gender, Violence and Betrayal (2026) was held at the Indoor Sports Centre at the University – featuring Dr Ogle, in conversation with Professor Pumla Dineo Gqola and feminist thinker and activist Kwezilomso Mbandazayo.
