George Campus Marks the Start of

Today, 1 October, George Campus proudly hoisted the Pride Flag in collaboration with the George Municipality, Prism Society and Garden Route Q***r Collective, marking the first time the campus has formally commemorated this occasion.

The day began with a vibrant walk, bringing together students, staff, members of the community and our valued partners, who walked together in a spirit of pride, solidarity and inclusion.

Students came out in numbers to witness and celebrate this meaningful moment as the Pride Flag was raised on campus, officially opening Pride Month at George Campus.
Today was more than the raising of a flag; it was a celebration of visibility, belonging, and the importance of creating spaces where everyone feels seen, respected, and valued.

Fashion and Textiles’ students in finals of both international and national competitions

Reasons to be Proud - : Five of the 16 finalists in the first South African edition of the Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award are final-year Bachelor of Visual Arts (Fashion and Textiles) students from Nelson Mandela University.

Students Siviwe Ngcuwe, Sonwabo Nkosi, Snegugu Ntshingila, Lathitha Poswa and Sphamandla Somerset have been selected as finalists in this competition, facilitated through SA Fashion Week and open to fashion institutions across South Africa.

The selection process included the submission and assessment of storyboards, with the final selection taking place directly at Pierre Cardin headquarters in France.

The five Mandela University finalists will travel to Johannesburg to attend SA Fashion Week for five days. Their programme will include workshops, fashion shows, behind-the-scenes access and an awards evening, where the overall winner will be announced.

The winner will receive the opportunity to spend a three-month internship at the Pierre Cardin Atelier in Paris, including accommodation, a stipend, an internship salary of £1 000 per month and all travel expenses.

Adding to this achievement, Lathitha Poswa is also a finalist in the BERNINA Dress Your Style 2026 Competition, together with fellow Mandela University student Brennan Stroud.

The BERNINA competition will culminate in a live “sew-off” final, where finalists will be challenged to construct garments under tight time and creative constraints.

The prize package is valued at between R80 000 and R100 000, comprising sewing machines and equipment.

Mandela University’s Dezi Rosenblatt representing South Africa in the African States Bowls Tournament

Reasons to be Proud - : Dezi Rosenblatt, a Biokineticist in the Department of Human Movement Science, is currently playing for South Africa in the African States Tournament in Lusaka, Zambia from 20 to 27 September.

Dezi is ranked 26th in the World Bowls Series.

She has already won a silver medal in the Trips discipline at the Multi Nations tournament in Australia and Gold, Silver and Bronze across three legs of the Tiger Bowls and One Belt One Road World Invitation tournaments in Hong Kong and China.

She has been a standout performer for the Proteas national team.

At the tournament held in Botswana, she had a historic run, capturing Gold Overall, Gold in the Pairs, and Gold in the Fours, while additionally being named the Personality of the Tournament.

Locally she plays for "The Woods Bowls Club and represents the Eastern Province Bowls district.

Second award for master’s research on construction-sector extortion

Reasons to be Proud - Mandela University Quantity Surveying associate lecturer and master’s student Shemondalay Jonas has received the international Chair’s Award – Professor Mohammad Dastbaz.

Ms Jonas presented her paper “Extortion-Related Disruption in South African Construction: Legal–Enforcement Misalignment in Organised-Crime Responses” at the 12th International Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society (SEEDS) Conference in London.

Researchers from around the world attended the conference co-hosted by Leeds Beckett University, MLA College, Loughborough University, the University of Suffolk and the University of the West of England, Bristol, in collaboration with GEDU Global Education and CIFAL City of London.

Established in 2015, SEEDS is an international research forum focused on sustainability, engineering and the built environment.

Selected conference papers are published through Springer Nature, adding to the academic significance of Jonas’s recognition, said her supervisor, Professor Gerrit Crafford from the Department of Quantity Surveying.

This award follows Ms Jonas’s success at the 15th SACQSP International Research Conference in 2025, where she received an award in the “Navigating Disruption in the Built Environment” category for her paper, “Building Resilience: Countering South Africa’s Construction Mafia Through Stakeholder Collaboration in the Construction Industry.”

Book launch panels question who belongs in the university

“Leadership matters! It is the difference between surviving and thriving,” urged Professor Saleem Badat at the launch of his latest book, Roads to Rhodes University and Beyond.

Prof Badat, a political activist and the first black Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, spoke passionately about leadership, transformation and the challenges facing higher education, asking: “Where do we build the depth and resilience for the next 30 years?”

Questions of belonging, power and transformation took centre stage at a dual book launch held at the South Campus Council Chambers on 16 September. The event encouraged academics to reflect on institutional culture and the experiences of those navigating South African universities.

The discussion centred on the launch of two books: Roads to Rhodes University and Beyond, a memoir by Prof Saleem Badat, and In the Belly of the University, an autoethnographic account co-edited by Dr Qawekazi Maqabuka, Professors Nomalanga Mkhize and Babalwa Magoqwana, Dr Glenn Holtzman and Prof Christi van der Westhuizen.
