This is how I teach phonics.

We don’t just teach children to sound out one letter at a time.

We teach them to see letter patterns as a unit, like EIGH, which represents the /ā/ sound in words like eight and weigh.

When children learn to recognise these patterns, reading becomes more accurate, automatic and fluent.

See the pattern → recognise the sound → read the word.

That’s the power of explicit, structured phonics teaching.

Who said learning to rhyme has to be boring?

Meet the Rhyming Pups from Learning Resources

We’re listening for the part of the word that stays the same, the rhyme, and using it to build new words.

And then things got silly…
Some of my little learners mixed up the pups to create their own nonsense words.

We raced.
We built.
We laughed.
And all the while, we were strengthening those important phonological awareness and decoding skills.

Because when children can hear the sounds in words, play with them and manipulate them, they’re building foundations for reading and spelling.

Learning through play with a purpose.

Build it. Change it. Read it.

Using magnetic letter tiles, children can build words and then manipulate individual sounds to create new words.

For example: cat → cot → dot → dog

This hands-on activity helps children develop phonemic awareness by hearing, identifying and manipulating sounds in words, while strengthening their understanding of how sounds connect to letters.

These skills are essential for decoding, spelling and becoming a confident reader.

Learning to read isn’t just about memorising words, it’s about understanding how words are built.
