Decoding is better than guessing

When children learn to read, they need to learn how letters and sounds work together so they can decode words.

❌ Guessing from the picture
❌ Guessing from the first letter
❌ Guessing based on what “looks right”

These strategies may sometimes help a child guess a word, but they do not teach them how to become independent readers.

✅ Decoding means looking at the letters, connecting them to their sounds, blending those sounds together and reading the word.

Strong readers use these skills to read new and unfamiliar words , not just words they have memorised.

If your child is struggling to learn to read, it is important to understand why. A Speech-Language Therapist can assess the underlying skills needed for reading, including phonological awareness, speech sounds, language, decoding, word reading and spelling.

Early support can make a meaningful difference. Your child does not need to keep guessing their way through reading.

When your child freezes on a tricky word, resist the urge to tell them straight away.
Instead, encourage them to:

✨ Blend the sounds together.
✨ Try the word again.

Giving children the chance to work it out builds confidence, strengthens decoding skills, and helps them become independent readers.

Every tricky word is an opportunity to practise, not a reason to give up.
